Transfering Windows 7 to SSD from HDD on new laptop?

Check in BIOS setup. Is Legacy BIOS enabled? If so then you're not running UEFI.

To decide if you want to reinstall look at the steps here to get a perfect Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 to compare how close you came. Did you handle drivers as given in tutorial? If not I'd reinstall.

Easiest is to Bypass UEFI to Install WIn7. Unplug any other HD's and peripherals first, as it says in the steps there.

Alright, i'm currently writing this message from the laptop running windows seven from the SSD. It boots up to the SSD and does have all of the drivers I originally installed (back when the SSD was the only drive in the laptop). Its running smoothly but the only problem i'm seeing is the speed in boot time and shutdown time.

When the SSD was the only drive in the laptop the start time was about 15 seconds and the shutdown time was 6 seconds, now that the HDD is plugged back in the start time is about 30 seconds and the shutdown time is 15 seconds. If I could get the computer running at the speed I was at with only the SSD in I would be more than satisfied.

On a different note, in bios I cannot find the word "enabled" next to legacy boot. There is however a subcategory under legacy boot and NO subcategory under uefi boot which leads me to thinking the computer is running legacy. The way I changed the boot sequence was going under the legacy boot subcategory and then putting the SSD before the HDD. Hopefully that rules out the bypass uefi install option.

If it is determined that I should try installing again whats the benefit of doing the clean re-install as opposed to the clean re-install. The clean install seems a lot easier to complete. Once I completed it my laptop was perfect, I just had issues when plugging the old HDD back in (issue being it booted before the SSD). Now that I changed the boot order the only problem i'm having is the boot/shutdown speed difference

When you go into "Computer", do you see a Floppy Drive there?

If you are running in Legacy BIOS with an MBR disk then you'd follow the steps in Bypass UEFI to Install WIn7 to reinstall.

You keep referring to a bunch of drivers being installed like this was XP. Did you read the steps in Clean Reinstall tutorial to see how drivers are handled in Win7? This is a driver-complete OS with most provided in the installer, updated via Windows Updates, then only 1-2 ever need importing after all Updates are done. If you're changing out drivers then you're second guessing Win7. I'd do it over.

The drivers I am refering to are the 28 drivers that came on origianally came on my computer.

They can be located here: Drivers & Downloads | Dell United States

I had to find them in order to install the ethernet driver to get online so I figured I would install the others that came on the computer. After that I let windows run every update it could possibly run.

Right now my laptop is running windows 7 fine from the SSD that I installed windows 7 on earlier. However, the laptop was a lot quicker when I didn't have the other 500 GB hdd plugged in. If I can get back to the normal SSD speed I would be content. Let me know if you are on the same page as I know we've been talking about a number of different things. Any thoughts?

I don't think we're on the same page. I never did the clean reinstall because I'm trying to first figure if anyone knows why my computer would be slower with the hdd plugged in compared to just having the ssd plugged in. Other than slow boot and shutdown times the computer runs windows 7 from the ssd perfectly. Are you following me

My point was if you changed out a bunch of drivers Win7 provided during install and via the initial rounds of Important and Optional Updates it can affect performance, so it's best to do the reinstall over to get it right following the steps in Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7.

As to the HD slowing boot once it's plugged in, please post back a screenshot of your maximized Disk mgmt drive map and listings using the Snipping Tool in Start Menu.

Have you tried other SATA ports to see if this makes any difference?

    1) How do I find these? I know how to use the snipe tool and will post the photos as soon as I know what you're talking about. My knowledge of computers only stretches so far (even though i'm assuming this is elementary stuff)

    2) I have not tried plugging the 500 GB HDD into a different SATA, it is in the SATA that Dell plugged it into.

    2) As for the clean reinstall, I will unplug the HDD and try doing it again with the SSD but this time I will have the ethernet cord plugged in so windows can do the updates without me needing to do anything. After that is complete and windows is running on good on my SSD when can I plug in my 500gb HDD again?

Please post back a screenshot of your maximized Disk Management drive map and listings:

    1. Type Disk Management in Start Search box.
    2. Open Disk Mgmt. window and maximize it.
    3. Type Snipping Tool in Start Search box.
    4. Open Snipping Tool, choose Rectangular Snip, click New, draw a box around full drive map and all listings.
5, Save Snip, attach using paper clip in Reply Box.

Tell us what is on each partition.

Thanks, I really appreciate the simplified explanation. Hope this helps

By the way, thanks for introducing me to the snipe tool, i've always used print screen + crop in paint.
