    Windows 7 with Intel Pentium D 925

Hi guys here is another hapless person looking for some help.

My 6 yo pc is running quite good with xp sp3 and these goodies.

    Operating System
MS Windows XP Professional 32-bit SP3
    CPU
    Intel Pentium D 925
    Presler 65nm Technology

512MB Radeon X1300/X1550 Series Secondary (Unknown)
    CrossFire Disabled
    Hard Drives
    160GB Maxtor Maxtor 6L160P0 (PATA) 29 °C
    117GB Seagate ST3120026A (PATA) 33 °C

    HP DVD Writer 1260v
    ELBY CLONEDRIVE SCSI CdRom Device
    Audio
    USB Audio Device

I took a notion to try windows 7.

So I installed ultimate x64 to see what it was like.

SO I quite like it, except that it runs slower than xp.

I guess that is because my system is so old.

I don't have any need for a real fast system but I would like some more ram, that is why I wanted to try x64.

I do a little photoshop and two or three tabs open in google and a couple of pics open and your 2gb is gone.

So really what I am after is some advice on something I could do to this set up to make it passable, or a budget update.

    Hope you can help.

Did you try 32 bit? I've run Win7 fast on 32 bit with 2gb. It runs well even on an old HP 510 laptop with 1gb.

A lot has to do with getting a perfect install, following the same steps as with Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7.

That said, if you can upgrade RAM I would do so. Google the make/model for choices, Use the Crucial System Scanner software to find out what type of memory is in your computer to confirm the specs.

Just a question: Where did you get and how did you activate the copy of Win 7?

A friend put it in for me to try.

    Edit to add.

It says windows, activated and gives the code in system.

Let's find out if your friend might have involved you unknowingly in criminal activity with a bootleg copy of Ultimate. It's rare a consumer needs the top-end version which is pretty expensive to be handing out like that.

Please run the Genuine Diagnostics tool (MGADiag.exe) at this link http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012. Click "Continue", click the "Copy" button then “Paste” the report into a reply message in this thread.

I doubt whether your friend installed a $200 Ultimate builder's retail OEM copy on your laptop, and it couldn't be factory OEM unless it came preinstalled with that version. So I'd guess he's installed an illegal bootleg on your laptop. This will be confirmed by our Genuine Windows expert as soon as he comes online.

If I were you I'd reinstall XP or buy a legal copy of Win7.

Well, if it's a hookey copy then that is an easy fix. But I am not doing anything until I am sure.

So until an expert tells us whether it's legal or not. Is it likely that being illegal would make it run slow.?
