Thank you all for your help, but I have opted to just do a clean reinstall of windows 7. I used Hiren's boot CD to launch a linux recovery environment to delete all my partitions, and then a mini windows xp to access the diskpart command, which I used to clean the harddrive. I then downloaded a windows 7 install iso, burned it, and then used it to install windows 7. The computer is running quite well now, and i'm actually quite happy to be rid of the asus recovery partition and all the bloatware that ASUS computers come with.
