    Another Slow Install/Slow Boot

Hi guys, i know everyone has seen this problem already, ive searched through out the forum and on google and tried some of the methods shown to no avail.

    Lets start from the beginning:

    System Specs:

    OS: Windows XP
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo CPU E8400 3.0GHZ
    Motherboard: MSI G31M3 V2 (MS-7529)
    Memory: 4GB
    Graphics Card: GeForce 7600
Sound Card: Creative SB0312 Audigy LS Sound Card
    Monitor: Acer AL1916W
    Hard Drive: Seagate 500GB

Ok now i have done the installation twice, each time it took around 5-6 hours to finish. Once finished, the boot time is very long it stays in the desktop loading screen for around 15-20 minutes. Also one weird thing that happens is my display goes out for around 5 minutes and then comes back again, idk if it's going to sleep or if it's a screen saver or w/e, but it happens alot. And once my desktop does finally load up everything is VERY SLOW.

Things to know: I am trying to install Windows 64 Bit

    Things i have tried:

-Both times i did a clean install NOT an upgrade
-Right now im on XP and i even attempted an upgrade but it didn't work
-I tried disabling my floppy disk in my BIOS
-I tried installing a video card driver Specifically for windows 7 didn't do anything

    Please help, thanks in advanced

Do some hard drive tests, possible HDD failure. Any unusual clicking from HDD?
SATA or IDE? Bios set up correctly, and up to date on Motherboard?
Try Resetting CMOS and try again.

each HD manufacturer has utilities to test for their specific drives. they do a more comprehensive test but there are many 3rd party apps that test generic drives.

One other thing to try - remove the sound card prior to installing the OS.

SeaTools | Seagate This is the link for their HD testing tool. Also like the posts above, try to do the install with the bare minimum of perhrials, 1 hard drive, 1 stick of ram, 1 video card, and keyboard and mouse. It is also a know fact that the speed at which the ISO was burned at should be the lowest speed like 4x for a clean ISO. If useing a burnig software that provides a burn test I suggest you use it when burning it to verify it was a clean burn. Another thing is where was the image required from MSDM, Technet? And what version and build # is it? Good Luck and welcome to sevenforums. Fabe

wow i love you guys! i took out the sound card/any extra USB devices/one stick of ram, and im not even exaggerating the installation took around 15 minutes, i am typing this post using windows 7 64 bit! something tells me it was the sound card though because the first time after i installed when it took 5-6 hours and the desktop was really slow i remember seeing an update for my sound card which would not install for some reason. anyway thanks again guys and just one more question, when i did the installation i used the format option in advanced settings, do you guys think that's ok? or should i go back and use kill disk or boot n nook to whipe out the disk? and then do another clean install?

You should be good. take some time and use the OS and make sure everything is working to your liking. Enjoy 7

Filling the hdd with 0's using a 3rd party software, I always recommend.

    But that's just me :)
