You don't have to install Ubuntu.Frank Cogburn said:
Can you actually run Ubuntu from the Live CD (I do not mean install)?
I'm not suggesting this as a permanent solution, but it will tell us if the OS files are working.
If you have "time to waste" you could:
- Create a backup image of your Windows setup
- Format the SSD
- Install Ubuntu only
This will prove that the installer is working properly.
Another option is to install an earlier version (e.g. 12.04) and then upgrade to the latest version using the Update Manager.
It usually is easy to dual boot Ubuntu (or Linux Mint) with Windows 7.Ham Radio said:

I have another 80g hard drive in this computer, with nothing on it. tried to install Ubuntu on it, same story. boots to setup screen and no further. Thanks to all, if I figure it out I'll post what I did.
Why don't you install it in virtual. That is soooo much easier and you will be up and running in no time.
I have installed Zorin (an Ubuntu derivative) that way. Here is how I did it: VMware Player - Install and Setup Zorin
Ubuntu should install the same way (even the VMware tools) because I installed it as Ubuntu 64bit since there is no Zorin option.
Hello to all that responded to my query. I hate to admit it but as usual in many of my problems, the problem is known as 'pebcak'. This board has on-board vga but I have a pci video card installed for better graphics, and after getting the manual out I found out that the on-board vga must be 'always enabled'. The cd was booting ok I just couldn't see it. Oh well another lesson learned. Even at 70 years of age, it still helps to rtfm! Mark this as solved! Thanks again, Frank
Thanks for leting us know, Frank. Don't be too hard on yourself, we've all done the same or even worse. But, at least you have it all sorted out.
Okay, saw this post and was hoping there was soemthing I could glean, and not sure. So, will post my problem and see.
Okay, did a clean swipe of HDD and installed Windows 7 PRO with no problem - everything working fine. Then "appear" to have installed Ubuntu 12.10 alongside Windows. When I start the computer, I have the choice of either selecting Windows or Ubuntu. When I select Windows, I have NO PROBLEMS. However, when I select Ubuntu, I get the following error message and need to know how to fix:
Windows failed to start and you must either:
1. Use Windows install disk
2. Choose your language
3. Click repair
File:\NST\AutoNeoGrub0.mbr
Status: 0Xc0000098
Selected entry could not be loaded because the application is missing or corrupt
So, thoughts on how to get Ubuntu to launch when I chose? Know there is something I am missing.......I believe the loader is looking for the file \NST\AutoNeoGrub0.mbr????
Maybe GRUB glitched.
Run your Ubuntu Live CD and then attempt to repair GRUB.

It looks more difficult to repair, than it actually is to repair.
You can also customise it while you are fixing it (if you want to). :)
Remember to navigate to the GRUB file on your HDD (you won't be able to edit the one on the CD). :)
