    Win7 -> Win7 data migration

    Hi all

My motherboard is dying and will have to be replaced soon. I'm evaluating build 7100 and I spend quite a lot of time setting everything up etc. I've seen different opinions but still I assume it will all go wrong if I change motherboard so I thought maybe there was a way to backup all data, installed programs and settings so that it could be restored on a fresh installation on a new setup. Wishful thinking?

    Thanks

the Easy Transfer Wizard is built-in Windows 7. Type that in the start menu.

Possible yes. difficult yes. what makes you think your mobo is "dying"?
Also depends on which version of win 7 you purchased. upgrade, or retail.

In any case even if you have to do a custom upgrade you can alway use the easy transfer wizard to import your settings.

    Hope this helps

In short - known issue with my mobo.

I've not purchased Win 7 yet but I quite like it so most probably I'll purchase Home Premium version. I'll try this easy transfer tool, I wasn't aware of it.

    thanks for suggestions

another thing to try, posted by another member:

You might want to look into something like Free backup software for Windows - GFI Backup Home Edition

"...GFI Backup 2009 allows you to back up all your important documents, photos, music, emails and program settings using a simple but smart wizard-driven interface to nearly every storage device (including local and external disk drives, LAN, CD/DVD, removable devices, remote FTP servers, etc.)...."

Can't hurt to give it a try and see if it can backup your settings so you can restore them . . .

Doesn't say it supports Win 7 (supports Vista though), but I guess I'll give it a shot since it's free.

    Thanks for that.

you didn't answer the question, What makes you think your motherboard is dying?

In reality, it could be your Processor and not the motherboard.

motherboard is likely to go first. Actually one of my boards is dying right now because of voltage issues.

with some older boards usually it's the capacitors that go bad.

Because it's not really relevant here :) Known issue with more and more frequent cold boot problems which may eventually turn into a total failure.

Hey, I actually had my Processor kill my motherboard and PSU. It all went "POP!" and turned off. I immediately started crying. I miss my old computer, so many memories and lots of files I'll never recover. My computer wants to format my HD's when I try and access them.

Anyways, I hope you fixed your issue.
