Unable to boot Windows System Repair Disc from CD Drive ASUS N56VM

    Hi,
I burned a system repair disc in Windows 7 from an iso file but it won't boot the Windows Systems recovery options.
I've tried booting this cd from the cd drive in both legacy and UEFI mode.
When I boot from legacy I get an error message saying that there is a system file error and to replace the disc and try again. When I boot using UEFI mode, it says press any key to continue, the windows bar starts loading but instead of going to the windows boot loader screen and giving me Windows Setup [EMS Enabled] option to boot into the System Recovery options, a command screen pops up and it then redirects me to the Asus Preload Wizard instead. This wizard wants to do 1 of 3 things only:
Recover Windows to first partition only
    Recover Windows to entire HD
Recover Windows to entire HD with two partitions.
I don't want to do any of the above - I just want to access the command prompt in the recovery tool and run 2 prompts to remove the grub bootloader from the MBR.
    Help!

Hello Staarlite and welcome to Seven Forums.

    Two thoughts come to mind.
    1. You had a bad burn of the ISO. Try burning another disk using a different burning app. I prefer the free ImgBurn and try burning at no more than 4x speed.
    2. Is BIOS set to boot from CD/DVD optical drive as first boot option?

    to remove grub from mbr:
first option from recovery environment->command prompt
    Code:

    bootrec/fixmbr
Or from within win7 elevated command prompt (bootsect in not in win7 by default):
    Code:
    bootsect/nt60 C: /force /mbr
Can you still boot to win7? Can you boot to recovery environment using f8 (Advanced Boot Options repair computer)?

    Hi and thanks.
I've actually burned 2 discs and both have had the same result. I used the iso installed in my laptop and it's worked for everything else I've burned so far...but I'll give the other a try to see if it is a bad burn or some other problem.
I press ESC when the system starts booting up and it gives me the choice of what I want to boot from. I've chosen the CD drive in both legacy mode and UEFI and the outcomes of both were described below.

Kaktussoft - as I currently can't access the recovery tool to enter the first 2 command prompts, when you give me the second option to boot from within windows 7, do you mean go to Start and bring up command prompt from there and then enter those 2 commands?
I have no problem with booting to windows 7. I've been trying (unsuccessfully) to install Ubuntu and am just trying to remove the grub bootloader from the last failed install before I try installing again.
And no I can't access the windows recovery environment from f8 - when I select this and "repair your computer" it takes me back to the bloody Asus preload wizard again!
I'm going to double check this rignt now to confirm! I'll be back....

Boot to win7 and enter Elevated Command Prompt

Now goto the folder where bootsect.exe is. For example

    Code:
    C:
    cd \users\whattheheck\downloads
dir bootsect.exe (is it really there?)
    bootsect/nt60 c: /force /mbr
command successfully? Now reboot machine. Grub is gone? Post results. bootsect.exe is attached to this post
I got it from X:\windows\system32 in recovery environment.

Ok so I checked and f8 takes me to the windows recovery area, but when I click on repair a command prompt comes up and directs me back to asus preload wizard. I'm going to try and burn another disc using the software above advised by marsmimar. thank you both for your support, i am quite frustrated! I wanted to be concentrating on getting ubuntu installed and am now having to deal with this instead - however, this is much more important since I'm concerned I can't access the windows recovery tools at all and only have the option to wipe everything and restore factory settings instead.....

I did the bootsect command myself and it works without problems

    bootsect/nt60 c: /force /mbr
Target volumes will be updated with BOOTMGR compatible bootcode.
    C: (\\?\Volume{06cb64c4-1f7a-11e2-9b80-806e6f6e6963})
Updated NTFS filesystem bootcode. The update may be unreliable since the
volume could not be dismounted during the update:
    Toegang geweigerd. (means access denied)
    \??\PhysicalDrive0
    Successfully updated disk bootcode.
Bootcode was successfully updated on all targeted volumes.
