It's the exact same OS with a few expensive extra features that can be unlocked which 90% if users don't even need: Compare Windows 7 Editions - Windows 7 Forums

If you still need Ultimate then you can insert an Ultimate retail or Anytime Product Key into Windows Anytime Upgrade - How to - Windows 7 Forums

If the Home Basic installation is corrupt, would an Anytime Upgrade do anything to fix it?

    (Not a rhetorical question.)

The Upgrade probably wouldn't run if OS was too corrupt since it only unlocks features in the extant OS. .

Better to run a Repair Install which is same-version Upgrade over itself while keeping all files, settings in place.

Often times running SFC /SCANNOW Command will reverse corruption encountered with a theme modification. If you can't run it from Win7 then run SFC /SCANNOW Run in Command Prompt at Boot from Win7 installer DVD or flash stick.

You need to burn the ISO provided in the Repair Install tutorial to disk or flash stick using Windows 7 USB-DVD Download Tool. Then you can run the repairs in the steps I gave you or do the Repair Install if SFC or the other steps aren't sufficient.

Run the sfc /scannow command before you do anything, as suggested.

hey gregrocker - extant - interesting word. Had to look it up - in existance, as opposed to extinct. Respect to GR.

    Shorter way of saying "existent."
