Installation of WINDOWS XP PRO fails and hangs on setup.

    I have a Toshiba Equium M70-173.

Type: Laptop Processor Type: Intel Pentium M Brand: Toshiba Processor Speed: 1.73 GHz Model: Equium M70-173 Memory: 512 MB

Hard Drive Capacity: 60 GB, 60 Screen Size: 15.4"
I thought I could install Windows 7 onto this laptop (It already had XP installed Just wanted win 7), it installed fine but then upon restarting it said it was not compatible with x64 versions (My own stupid mistake). I then tried to install XP Professional from a disc I have, It boots from disk and enters the Blue screen with the setup options (NOT BSOD). I select continue to progress with the installation and it loads what it says it is doing (What I see at the bottom in white writing) But then it 'hangs' or 'freezes' I don't know the actual term if there is one on 'Setup is starting windows'. I'm fearing that I have made some terrible irreversible mistake by installing win 7 stupidly when it cannot handle it as I only learnt that after the obvious error. Could anyone please help me revert back to windows XP I have the disc here and have tried to use it in the method Like this:

    1. Put in the cd and turn on computer
    2. windows will load and say something about "press F6" to install raid controller drivers"
    3. Hit F5 instead of F6 (Suggested by a friend)
    4. It gave me an option that said something like. .."standard PC i486"
    5. I select that option and it then tells me I have no Hard drive/disk installed.

At this point I am deeply worried I have ruined my laptop forever maybe it irreversible I do not know I hope it isn't but i'm not sure hence my appeal for help. I was told It could be that the 'SATA drive is not being detected' and to quote this is what was said to me: 'Check your bios, make sure your sata controller is set to ATA, not AHCI. Otherwise the computer wont see the drive when trying to install XP in some cases.' I am sorry if my lack of knowledge here is coming across frustrating but I do not know how to do this.

    Thanks for reading

    - Mike

EDIT: I have just tired to restore to factory settings and selected the option 'Earlier version of windows' and it says this:

Windows Could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: <Windows root> \system32\ntoskrnl.exe

please reinstall a copy of the above file.
    'Windows could notstart

You could not have ruined your laptop by trying foolishly to install Win7 with only 512mb RAM. But you should have run Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor first, and could have easily shrunk XP to try a Dual Boot with Win7 first.

Do you still have the XP Recovery partition on the HD? See if it will run Recovery by triggering that key at boot, normally given on the first screen. You may need to google your exact model for how to run its Recovery.

If Recovery will not run and you didn't bother making the Recovery Disks, Boot into BIOS setup to set SATA controller to IDE mode. If no SATA controller setting can be found on any tab, reset BIOS to defaults, save and exit. Trigger the CD from the Toshiba F12 boot menu key. Then try booted CD install, report back exact failure point and message.

Next try wiping the HD first with Diskpart Clean Command accessing DISKPART At PC Startup.

Check the CD for smudges or scratches. Try another XP CD for your exact version, retail- or OEM-specific, with SP3. If you must download one from a torrent be sure to check the comments that nothing is added like a activation crack since you need only a clean copy of the installer.

Hi Greg, first of all thank you for the reply.

I jumped in the deep end here and now I am paying the consequences, I won't be doing this again I assure you!

I'm not familiar with finding out if the Windows XP recovery partition is there, could you help me out with that please. (The link showed 'Page cannot be found')

BIOS settings Reset now, disc boot attempted and this error was provided

Windows Failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem

1.Insert your windows installation disc and restart your computer
2.choose your language settings, and then click "next".
    3. click 'repair your computer'.

If you do not have this disc, contact your system administrator or computer manufacturer for assistance.

    File: \Windows\system32\winload.exe

    Status: 0xc000035a

info: Attempting to load a 64-bit application, however this cpu is not compatible with 64-bit mode.

Just used disk clean and attempted to install windows XP again and it failed it still waited on the setup again. I will try to get hold of another XP disc and see if that makes a difference.

    Also tried repair option and it says;

Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer.

Make sure any hard disk drives are powered on and properly connected to your computer, and that any disk-related hardware configuration is correct. this may involve running a manufacturer-supplied diagnostic or setup program.

Setup cannot continue press f3 to quit.

    Thank you for your help

I looked at the specs for your PC and it supports up to 2gb RAM which is also amazingly inexpensive for that model, so I'd reconsider WIn7 trying a 32 bit installer for your licensed version. Then after install immediately confirm and upgrade your RAM: Toshiba Equium M70-173 Memory & RAM Chip Upgrades - Lifetime Guarantee! We can help you do this.

Download the 32 bit installer for your licensed Win7 version from Step 1 and burn to DVD or write to flash stick using tool in Step 2 of Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 .

Boot the installer and do a Custom install as shown in Clean Install Windows 7.

Keep in mind you are going to need to immediately upgrade your RAM to make Win7 run with any installed programs.

So get online by installing the Vista 32bit Wireless LAN driver from Archived files at Driver Downloads - Laptops | Toshiba - Toshiba. The driver model is discussed here but yours may require another one posted so try all if necessary: http://forums.computers.toshiba-euro...threadID=65103

Then run the Crucial System Scanner software to find out what type of memory is in your computer to confirm the RAM specs given in the Google shopping link I posted in first paragraph. Once confirmed you can pick up that RAM at your local shop or order it online. I doubt you'll find it any cheaper than in the first link, if you confirm it's correct via Crucial scanner. There were also a dozen other Shopping links for your model + RAM upgrade.

I would install 1gb RAM in the first slot (closest to processor) so you have 1500 which should give you decent performance. I run 1gb on an old laptop I own with older specs.

If you want to go back to XP you'll need to order your Recovery disks which should have been made when the PC was set up, or I'd find a 32 bit XP installer to install Win7. To try to run Recovery now you'll have to run Partition Wizard CD Partition Recovery Wizard - Video Help.
Once all partitions are undeleted post back a camera snap of the full drive map so we can see what's still intact, and possibly help run Recovery if you can't even research how to do that on your PC.

I have tried the Re installation as from above and now it hangs on this 'Expanding Windows Files' and stays on (0%) an error message is then displayed after about 5 minutes into this:

Windows cannot installed the required Files. Make sure all files required for installation are avaliable, and restart the installation. Error code. 0x8007045D

Unplug all other HD's and peripherals,

Boot into BIOS setup, reset to defaults, save changes. If an EFI BIOS, enable Legacy BIOS or Compatibility Support Module, set DVD drive first to boot, HD second. Then set SATA controller to AHCI. Save changes and Exit.

Then boot into Win7 installer DVD or flash stick burned or written using tool and latest ISO for your licensed OS version here.

At first installer screen Press Shift + F10 to open a Command Box, type:

    DISKPART
    LIST DISK
SELECT DISK 0 (after confirming Windows 7 target HD #)
    CLEAN
CREATE PARTITION PRIMARY SIZE=102400 (for 100gb partition, adjust as desired)
    FORMAT FS=NTFS LABEL="WINDOWS 7"
    ACTIVE
    EXIT
    EXIT

Next click Install Now, then Custom install to Clean Install Windows 7 to the partition you created. If it fails then report back at which step and the verbatim error message.

In addition read over these steps to understand the tools and methods which work best to get and maintain a perfect Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7. The steps are the same for retail.

After install you can adjust partition size or Create new partitions for data, etc. in Disk Mgmt. You are creating the partition here for the purpose of marking it Active which overcomes certain install failures.

Did you download a new ISO and burn to DVD using the tool provided? If so then try again. If it fails try the flash stick method, setting HD to boot and triggering flash stick using the ESC or F9 one-time BIOS Boot menu key at boot.
