Prepping for CLEANEST Win 7x64 install yet, hanging with Kaspersky

    Hi folks,

After tangling with a pesky piece of malware yesterday, and having recently added a TV tuner card making this my only source of television, I'm ready to start fresh and do a clean install with retail 7 Pro DVD.

I don't think I read the tutorials very closely last time I was here and hadn't realized I can START with SP1 instead of original release. Boy will that be nice since I inevitably run into a windows update issue getting back to SP1 from scratch. So, I'd like to do the USB installer and wondered if instead of a flash drive I can use an older USB 2.0 pocket hard drive (BUSlink "USB2.0 Disk-On-The-Go/Lite") instead and that way I can fit all my gathered drivers on it as well? Does a BIOS know the difference or just sees both as drives and looks for boot media?

By the way I ended up in Kaspersky Rescue disk just to see if it would find anything (OS still bootable), and I ended up staying for a while and doing my driver gathering within this environment. It's nice and safe and I seem to have all the file manager and browser tools I need. Not sure if I can actually create the bootable media in here or not, haven't gotten that far yet. If anyone has a thought on this or knows something I don't yet, please chime in.

    Thanks

EDIT: i see I need to run a Microsoft program to make the drive bootable with the .iso so that answers that part.

How drivers are best handled in Win7 is explained in the steps to get a perfect Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 which are the same for retail.

You only need your network LAN driver in your backup so if it's not provided by installer you can install it to get online quickly to run all rounds of Important and Optional Windows Updates, after enabling Automatically get recommended drivers and updates for your hardware (Step 3).

Only then should you import any missing Drivers in Device Manager from the PC or Device's Support Downloads webpage.

    Hi Greg,

I got that part. Using 1 drive is just for simplicity and my question is whether I can do the USB . iso boot thing from a small 2.0 USB hard drive or if it has to be flash drive. Will that be compatible with the Microsoft tool which writes the iso and with bios (I'm thinking yes on this part).

The ms tool just failed after successfully formatting my flash drive. Said it couldn't copy the iso so I'm now in my windows desktop trying to download again :0

He has an HDD with a USB connection as I understand it. I've never tried booting from one, but it may be possible. If not a flash drive (4gb) had be had very low cost, ~~$5 maybe.

4 GB. What's the best way to check out a flash drive for possible infection I would assume in the boot area.I just applied a system image from 5 days ago so the OS should be much more usable now at least to get me to the point of installation. If I can get the flash drive going. So is a USB mini drive not a possibility for a substitute for the flash drive. It has 18 gig.I can't think of why any of the components involved in this installation would care one way or the other what the actual storage media is.but then again you never know.

I've not seen a method that works to install Win7 from bootable external HD, just run the files from it to overwrite C which isn't a real Clean Install Windows 7.

You'd want a bootable installer for that as provided in Steps 1 and 2 of Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7.

I'd buy a 4gb flash stick for around $5, borrow one from a friend, or buy a 5 pack of DVD's for $2 on the Walgreens wall rack near the camera dept.

Finally back up and running here and everything seems to be stable since the system image was applied. Redownloading the USB tool and iso file so we'll see. I may indeed need a fresh USB stick, this one has seen some action. Once I have a bit more assurance that the media is the issue I'll treat myself to some fresh stock for sure.
