Windows Upgrade errors on compliance check

I have windows 7 enterprise x64 installed on my machine. I've been having troubles for a while. Many updates don't install, and device drivers won't install when a new device is plugged in (extremely annoying). I thought that I could do an in-place upgrade install and possibly fix the problem, but I'm getting the following error message (on both an attempt to upgrade back to win 7 enterprise and also to win 8 enterprise):

"An error prevented a required compliance check from completing. Cancel the installation and try upgrading again."

I've wasted hours and hours on this. Microsoft wants $300 to help me, so I'm hoping that someone here can help me. Thanks in advance for all the help.

Where are the log files for this.

If all of your hardware is fine I would suggest doing a full system image to an external drive and doing a clean install of Win 7 or 8.

I've had enterprise for about 4 years. It's part of my companies volume license. I purchased the win 8 enterprise, so I could switch away from the company license.

I was hoping to avoid the clean image. If I do have to do a clean image, I'm going to switch away from enterprise.

I'm curious if you think that Microsoft support would be able to get the upgrade done. Should I pay $300 to save the time to re-image? Does anyone have experience with them? If they don't solve your problem do you still get charged?

Since I don't have the support contract number, I can get support from Microsoft at $300/incident. I've wasted so much time on this already that I'm tempted to do that.

There is nothing MS Support can provide that we can not also provide.

However the reason we're skeptical is because Enterprise is only administered by IT depts at organizations which purchase volume licenses. So it's not clear how you're doing this individually since even if your IT pro says you can use the license at home it's still activated and administered by him/her under the license agreement.

What type of Win8 license did you buy? If it's retail then I'd delete all partitions during a booted install and Clean Install - Windows 8. If it's Enterprise and your IT pro is onboard then he'll help you with this and activation.
