Installing upgrade Windows 7 onto new PC

you formatted the HDD so it was NOT an upgrade

You can't upgrade a 32bits OS to an 64bits OS.
You want to do a in place upgrade from either a 32-bit version of Windows Vista to a 32-bit version of Windows 7, or a 64-bit version of Windows Vista to a 64-bit version of Windows 7. You cannot upgrade from 32-bit to 64-bit. You can only do a clean install from 32-bit to 64-bit, or from 64-bit to 32-bit.

Why not simply clone the current win7 disk to SSD? Then you still have all your programs, settings and documents. To many files on current harddisk and it won't fit on SSD? .... Move documents and pictures and music an so on temporary to an external disk.

If you want this upgrade path... post screenshot of disk managemnt please with all fields visible. And say how large SSD is. After that I'll give you more instructions

Windows installer did let you do a CLEAN install becuase another win os (vista) was found.

Clean Install with a Upgrade Windows 7 Version pretty easy.

Why not simply clone as asked before?

Basically, because I naively assumed they would know the best way of doing it as they were professionals

I knew nothing about cloning so couldn't suggest this to them and I fear that they have now proceeded with the clean install.

They could have put the old disk in new machine. Or clone the old disk to new disk. Or make a backup from old disk to external disk, afterward restore the backup to new disk (if cloning was impossible in case both disks can't attached to 1 system the same time).

After that the new system won't boot because it's confused about a wrong sata driver. https://www.dropbox.com/home/Paragon...tive%20Restore (pdf manual included) can fix it easily and fast. Of course they have to install new drivers later from motherboard install CD or from some website (they have to do that anyway).

Or they could have done this Windows 7 Installation - Transfer to a New Computer
