Question about going from RC1 to Retail

I know I can't upgrade since I bought Home Premium and RC1 is Ultimate so I need to do a clean install, which sucks but what can you do.

How does this work then? Do I simply drop the DVD in and it'll take care of everything for me? Do I need to format my entire C: drive? I can backup all of my documents and important files but what about programs? Will I have to re-install everything? Drivers too?

Doing a clean install will not save your programs. You could use Windows Easy transfer to try and help, but in the end, you will still need to re-download your programs.

As for the install itself: If you boot from the DVD, and simply choose to install on the same partition as your RC, it will move all of your files to a folder called Windows.old and place it in C:

You do not need to format the drive before you install, but if you run into problems, it might be a good idea. The partition already has a format, and should not need a new one.

    Welcome to Seven Forums.

There are some great tutorials here, you can get the Tutorial quick reference list for Installing Windows 7 here, or the Sticky on Installation & Setup forum.

These will explain the steps, and you can see all the requirements.

    Among others you will find:

Clean Installation with Windows 7 - This will show you how to do a clean installation with Windows 7.

Windows Easy Transfer - Transfer To & From Computers - This tutorial will show you how to transfer your user files and settings from one computer to another using the Windows Easy Transfer tool.

When using Windows Easy Transfer you can get most of your user settings back. You will still have to install all your programs first.
The tutorials explain everything with step by step instructions.

Most of your drivers will be installed when you install Win7, you still need to check them and install any missing or old ones.
