Installing a new PSU help

That horrible ASrock board I had was that way. IT had stickers on the 8 and 24 pin board connectors saying a 4 or 20 pin could be used. The extra pins in both cases are 2 12V and 2 ground wires.

Yep I remember that little piece of work. I did try downloading the manual for that board for the young bloke but my net speed had slowed to a crawl for some reason it might have had some info in it

Yep. There should be a notch on one so that when placed together, it creates the 8 pin.

Running on 4 pin is fine however 8 pins 'spread the load' so to speak as Britton mentioned.

Essentially it's to stop too much current being drawn from socket.


As for the PSU itself, it'll be fine as long as you aren't running a high overclock with a couple of video cards.


The specs are decent, but I wouldn't want to to push it too much in case. But your current specs are fine and shouldn't push the unit too hard.

I actually found it quite fun, and my case is now a lot tidier what with the new PSU having cable sleeves, with some ties got all the wites that were hanging before (from original purchse) out of the way and improved airflow :)

I connected up to 4+4 and everythings working fine, however I did had a slight issue with the 24pin being stuck in the mobo, and had to admit I felt my arse tighten as I had to apply more pressure on the connector to remove it.. lol

I think when I have a bit of cash i'll got for the corsair cx700 series, and what with the cable management I went through today, i'm really starting to like the idea of a modual power supply.

Yep mate I like the semi modular ones myself as you have to have the 24 pin and the basic ones fitted up anyway and they are easier to make look good. My HX 650 was one such beast and it is unreal but this CX Series might be just as well for you:)

Sometimes the 24-pin is a bit tight. I use one hand to hold the latch open while grabbing the wires with the other and pulling while wiggling it back and forth.
