    Open .rar files with 7-zip.

I've tried to associate 7_zip with .rar files so that I can Open them. I now have the attached.

But nothing happens when I double-click the .rar file.

Either what do I need to do to get this to work? Or, how do I remove it? I followed "Option 2" here File Extension Type - Unassociate but that did not do it.

    Right click on that file
    Choose 7-Zip select Open Archive.
Now you can see the files stored on that folder.
Hit on Extract button to unzip those files.

Yep, that's how I was opening it but I wanted to improve things.

Now I have messed it up and wish to undo the mess (right-click etc still works).

Associating 7-zip with .rar files. Although the association was made, when I double-click a .rar file, or right-click >> Open, nothing happens

    -------------------
    Bright idea just arrived ....

I looked at the Properties of the 7-zip File Manager in my Start Menu >> All Programs etc. The shortcut referenced the 7zFM.exe file. Yesterday, when I was setting up the association, I picked 7z.exe.

I have now selected 7zFM.exe and it all works as expected.
    :)

All I have to do now is work out how to remove "7-zip Console" from the "Open with" list.

    Edit:

I tried this tutorial Open with - Clean Up and Remove Programs but it's still there.

Thank you VistaKing for your continuing help; it's much appreciated.

Attached is a screenshot showing the elements that I now wish to remove (don't worry about the 'Infekted' filename, it's a product brand name, nor about Firefox, I can remove that entry later when I have sorted out this issue).

I've done some Registry investigation and am getting closer. Also attached is a summary of the Registry entries for .rar. Some entries appear under several keys. For clarification I should say that I have installed 7-Zip but not WinRAR.

It seems to me that there are two issues here:
    (a) for .rar, there is are 2 references to 'rar_auto_file' (the blue arrows),
and the class 'rar_auto_file' references the 7z.exe program (the 7_Zip Console, the one I want to remove)
    (b) there is an Applications definition for 7z.exe

It would interesting to see what other users have in the .rar and rar_auto_file entries, so see what I need to change. Could someone have a look?

I did have a thought to modify the Open Command for rar_auto_file from 7z.exe to 7zFM.exe. That does not seem too risky?

    --------------------
On reflection, perhaps I should have used the File Association window within 7-Zip to set it up. I'm not going to do that now as it will introduce more unknowns. But if anyone has done it, please post what your Registry entries for .rar and rar_auto_file look like.

    Thank you for the link.

Anyone care to post their Registry entries (as in my post #7 above) so that I can compare yours with mine?
