Windows 7 Build 7600 to Windows 7 via upgrade

I have the trial version that expires in 90 days....well now it's 61 days.

Based on the Downgrade: Change Windows 7 Ultimate to Premium or Professional link, it seems as if it might work for me since I don't want to do an upgrade, but rather a clean install with the upgrade disk. I have all my files backed up using windows backup, to an external hd, so that's no problem at all.

Enterprise Trial is timebombed. It just stops after 90 days. Cant use keys (none were asked for when installing and activating). The only reasonable cure is format-clean install.

Technet says that any activated OS after 2000 will allow Upgrade disk install to proceed. MS announced the RC is allowed. I believe Enterprise might work but as with RC it would only be available for use for reinstalling the upgrade until it expires, then it will need an XP or Vista.

However, the questiion remains whether an image of the finished Upgrade (a must since it will save two reinstalls), if used in place of future reinstall, would even reveal the underlying XP/Vista/RC/Enterprise OS at all. The file apparently just has a check for OS activation at the time it is run, not the ability to track the underlying OS to see if it continues to be activated, unless it is reinstalled to be upgraded again.

Another reason to rely on an image of finished Upgrade for all future reinstalls!

Thanks for all the help. I plan on getting a new hard drive by the 22nd, so I think what I'll do is just reinstall windows vista with the disk that came with my computer on that new HD, and then use the windows 7 upgrade disk.

After windows 7 is installed, I guess I'll have to go online and install the drivers for my system from Dell and run windows update as well.

I had a quick question about the drivers for my system, I've entered my tag into Dell's site and it gives me this entire list, but not everything applies. My system has remained largely unchanged except for the new video card (listed under my specs), power supply, and Blu-ray Recording drive. Could anybody help me out on the drivers and what order they need to be installed in and whether I should wait until I upgrade to Windows 7 to do it, or install the drivers immediately after I reinstall Windows Vista?

Ken is right. Win7 has an huge store of drivers on its installer, and Windows updates will fill out the rest.

But just to be certain you can get online, I suggest you download now your ethernet adapter/NIC to a stick so you can install it if your wired/wireless adapter doesn't get its driver. Then you can browse for alternate drivers on your product page, and at Adobe for reader/flash, and Java for runtime and maybe their free office.

With Win7, for example, the previous need to install chipset drivers first has not been needed on any of my computers because the ones on the product web page are either the same or older than what the Win7 installer/Updates provides. Same with most others. But you should look them over carefully to see what you get vs. what's available.

I looked over the Dell Drivers & Downloads page for your XPS 430 and it is quite similar to my XPS 420. I can say that almost all of the drivers will be installed with the Windows 7 disk, including the Intel 825xx Gigabit LAN drivers (same as mine). Windows 7 should be a breeze to install.

Thanks for the help. It's nice to know that I don't hav to worry about installing the chipset drivers, or finding the page I printed out that tells me what order to install the drivers in.

I'll reinstall windows vista 64 on my new HD when it gets here thursday, and then immediately use the upgrade program (since I won't have the disk from that win741 site for a while) to do a clean install.
