i used avg for years without any problems, then tried avast but had trouble with registration so i went back to avg this year. i am uninstalling avg and using only mse going forward based on your recommendation. Found my printer problem was a loose connection when i was moving my desktop around checking connections etc. Going to uninstall Windows Live Essentials as i already use Thunderbird as my default email program. Then i will start on the clean install,but I dont really know what a "official win 7 installer ISO" is so ill have to research that.
I ran a full scan of malwarebytes and it took about 8 hours...19 infections which i removed, but it doesnt make any difference in getting my pc to boot up normally/
i have used Belarc Advisor on all my computers for quite a few years to give me an updated profile at a given point in time, but when you say "run an audit of hardware and software" do you mean just to check to see what is actually in my computer today?
Finally and if this is stupid ...sorry...dont i want to use my original Win 7 instll disc to reinstall Windiows and if not, why not?

i have uninstalled AVG, Windows Live Essentials and am only using MSE for anti virus etc now. Cant seem to get Windows Defender to operate even though i have it in my system. I also switched my start up menu from custom to normal to see if it would do anything. Every day i am able to finally find a way to get my system to boot up and after it does Windows works perfectly. I know that isnt a long term solution to my problem, but I am going to have to settle for it right now due to a family emergency which makes it necessary for me to leave town for awhile. After i return i will try the clean install process and if I am unsuccessful i will probably buy a new desktop and work on my old one as an educational exercise. Yesterday i ran a System and Performance Monitor test of my system and the results said that every element of my system rated POOR. It is hard to believe that these ratings are related to my boot up problem as opposed to the general condition of my sytem which must be due to its age???? The desktop after bootup is now working very well and faster than it has in quite a while. I am running Malwarebytes daily right now and also CCleaner trying to keep it cleaned out.

So i dont think you folks can help me anymore due to my experience and computer skill limitations, but you have helped me tremendously already ..so i am marking my problem as SOLVED at this point. Thanks again for all your help.

Windows Defender is turned off by default when MSE is installed.

You should have everything unchecked in msconfig>Startup and >Services (after checking Hide all MS Services) except MSE, any sync, gadgets or stickies you're using. Keep it that way.

Check also in your browsers Tools>Add Ons that only Flashplayer is enabled, only Search allowed is Google set as default with box ticked to prevent any others from intruding as spyware will try to do.

During the time since the last post on this thread i have continued to try to overcome my boot up problem without success. I do not want to do a clean reinstall of Win 7 unless i have no choice. Fortunately, trying a number of random techniques i have been able to get my pc to boot up every day, but there is no rhyme or reason to the single step which ultimately results in the computer booting up. The good news is that once booted up my pc is running as well as i can recall it ever running in all respects. Lately it seems that it is becoming harder..taking longer..for me to find the step which gets it to boot up. I have a repair disc which it will sometimes access and sometimes not...I do have the D drive set in the first boot position so i cant figure out why it does activate the repair disc sometmes but not others. That said i cant identify a single time when the repair disc has actually caused the PC to boot up. Each time i find myself turning the PC of and off and on again and pushing the F8,F2 keys and also the power button. After repetitive pushing these buttons, and for no particular reason i can identify, suddenly it boots up giving me the usual options ..safe mode etc and i always just click on ...open windoes normally...and it does and runs fine until i shut it down.
I have now resorted to leaving the PC turned on 100% of the time as i am worried it will someday just stop booting up, but i dont want to keep doing that forever.

i am ready to do the clean reinstall as my last resort because i have done everything else and while the PC is working perfectly after booting up, i have run out of ideas on how to fix the system bootup problem.

This is one final request for any suggestions anyone can offer. Thanks so much for all the help.

Check for remaining infection with a Malwarebytes full scan.

Test the system file integrity with SFC /SCANNOW Command.

Try a few Startup Repairs.

Post back a screenshot of Disk Management - Post a Screen Capture Image so we can check it over.

Establish a Clean Boot, check the logs for repeat errors including Performance log at time of start up, utilize the System Resources given to check for Solutions and Generate a System Health Report - all from Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7.

Report back results from above steps and then keep working through the other Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7.
