    Default User Change

I have set up my partners computer with two users - Admin and one for her. She has a habit of turning the computer on and going away for some time (an hour or so) while it boots up. She tells me that sometimes, when she gets back to the computer, it has booted into the Admin user (I do not password protect that user). I cannot understand how that happens, except I have noticed that this user is the default user in that there is a box around it and just pressing Return takes it system into that user profile.

    So, my questions are:

    1. Is it possible that, after some time waiting for a user selection, the machine adopts the 'default' user? Everything I know suggests not

    2. Is there a way of changing the 'default' user? It may be that she presses Return to turn the screen on after leaving it, and by so doing selects the Admin user

I realise I can password protect the Admin user, and that would solve the problem, but I would really like to understand what is going on

    Hello John,

I suppose this could be from her being logged into the Admin account and put the PC to sleep. If it is from a cold boot, then she may have press Enter/Return at the right time to basically select the Admin account to log in to. The Admin account would be listed first by default since it's normally first alphabetically. Without a password, Windows would log right into it when selecting it.

One option would be to password protect the Admin account so that it cannot be logged in to by mistake. This would be the easiest option.

Another option would be to set Windows to require users to enter both a user name and password to log in instead of just selecting a user and entering that account's password.
    Hope this helps, :)

Brink - thanks for your reply.

She swears she does not press anything before getting to the Admin screen, and I am pretty sure that she does shut down fully each time.

I suspect that she (or the cat. ;-)) presses a button that accepts the Admin user at some time. From what you said, if I change the name of the admin user from Admin to Zadmin the system should make the other one (ie her) the first named, and thus, if she (or the cat) is pressing a key or a mouse button to wake the screen up, it will take her into her account?

If that is what's happening, then it should. It would be worth a try to see at least.
