    Setup is preparing your computer for first use


    Hey guys,

    I just did a custom install of Win 7 32 bit on my machine running Win XP 32 bit. I burned a legit ISO and verified it. After about 5 hours the instAll finally completed so I had a feeling that something went wrong. Maybe it's just my system because I tried installing it with a virtual drive and it was still slow.

    After a reboot, the screen goes black and says "Setup is preparing your computer for first use." I've left it on this screen for about two hours without any progress.

    What I have tried:

    Booting from installation CD. Booting from the cd starts up windows and stops at a blank blue screen with flowers. Mouse and keyboard are useable but nothing happens.

    Shift+F10 to access device manager and uninstall devices. DisplAy adaPter is already using Standard VGA. No progress.

    Windows repair console. Asks for a non existent admin password.

    Specs: Asus PW5 dh deluxe mobo
    Intel core2 duo
    2gb RAM
    250gb hdd

    Hi there,

    If you say your OS [ISO] source is legit, at what speed did you burn the CD from the ISO?

    Burn it at a speed no greater than 2x and try booting the new CD and do the install.

    I think I burned it on 4x so that may be the problem.

    I tried creating a bootable USB using directions from a thread on here but I'm only getting "Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key."

    I'm going to try it one more time then try to burn a CD at 2x. Will update with results ASAP.

    UPDATE: Burned a CD at 2x yet when I try to boot from CD it still loads up windows and gives me the blank blue screen with flowers on it.

    Unplug all other HD's and peripherals,

    Boot into BIOS setup, reset to defaults, save changes. (If an EFI BIOS you'll need to decide if you want UEFI BIOS vs. Legacy BIOS. If UEFI follow these special steps for Install, otherwise enable Legacy BIOS or Compatibility Support Module to proceed with normal install.) Set DVD drive first to boot, HD second, set SATA controller to AHCI, Save changes and Exit.

    Then boot into Windows 7 installer DVD or flash stick burned or written using tool and latest ISO for your licensed OS version here.

    At first installer screen Press Shift + F10, or enter System Recovery Options to open a Command Box, type:

    DISKPART
    LIST DISK
    SELECT DISK 0 (after confirming Windows 7 target HD #)
    CLEAN
    CREATE PARTITION PRIMARY
    FORMAT FS=NTFS LABEL="WINDOWS 7"
    ACTIVE
    EXIT
    EXIT

    Next click Install Now, then Custom install to Clean Install Windows 7 to the partition you created. If it fails then report back at which step and the verbatim error message.

    In addition read over these steps to understand the tools and methods which work best to get and maintain a perfect Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7. The steps are the same for retail.

    After install you can adjust partition size or Create new partitions for data, etc. in Disk Mgmt. You are creating the partition here for the purpose of wiping the HD and marking Active which overcomes certain install failures.

    Did everything as instructed and booted from the CD. It brought me back to the blank blue login screen so I'm guessing it's not the ISO I was provided. After I typed diskpart into cmd I receive the following prompt:

    Microsoft DiskPart version 6.1.7601
    Copyright 1998-2008 Microsoft Corporation.
    On computer: MINWINPC
    _

    And then I can no longer type. I left it here about 30 minutes before I felt it would not make anymore progress.

    Boot into BIOS setup to see that the HD is detected and registering.

    Test the RAM using Memtest86+ to Test RAM for 5-6 passes. and HD from the HD Maker's HD Diagnostic Extended CD scan followed by Disk Check from System Recovery Options Command Line.

    Confirm you downloaded a new ISO and burned/wrote it using the tool provided. Try it on another PC to see if you get further.

    Ran all tests without any issues or errors popping up. After I ran Check Disk in command prompt, I was unable to type just like diskpart. Completely clueless as to what could have caused this

    Tried the CD on another computer and successfully reached the language prompt so I tried it on the computer that I'm trying to install Win 7 on. It still came to the same blank blue login screen but the language prompt popped up after I accidentally left it on for a while.

    I tried to get to PostGatherPnPList.log using your directions mentioned at Getting stuck on "setup is preparing your computer for first use"
    but no log was present in the Panther folder.

    Then I attempted to use the System Repair and System Recovery tools to no avail. System Repair told me that it was unable to fix the problem automatically. It sent a log to Microsoft with the problem event name "StartupRepairOffline." System Recovery didn't have any restore points, they must have been deleted with the install. Tried to reinstall Windows from the CD as well but it went extremely slow so I halted it.

    Now Windows doesn't even start up! After the Windows logo pops up, the monitor shuts down so I'm guessing a driver couldn't load properly. Enabled bootlogging and used cmd to move ntbtlog.txt onto an external HD (It is attached to this reply.) Shows classpnp.sys as the last driver to load up.

    Have any suggestions?

    Please confirm which HD extended CD test you ran, if it is the one for your model HD, and what it reported exactly.

    How many passes did you run memtest?

    I also asked you to confirm you tried a new ISO and burned to DVD using the tool provided in initial steps I gave. If so write ISO to USB flash stick and try that method.

    Reseat all cables and connections. How exactly did you reset BIOS to defaults. Do you have any UEFI settings in BIOS setup?

    Next try booting free Partition Wizard bootable CD to highlight and then wipe the HD from Disk tab. But first run http://partitionwizard.com/video-hel...itiontest.html and http://partitionwizard.com/video-help/check/check.html
