What anti-virus application do you guys recommend please?
I also use Mailwasher Pro but have noticed this is very slow or doesn't always pick-up my mail since carrying out the in-place reinstall?
Thanks again for any/all input

Mailwasher is an anti-spam application, not an anti-virus application.
For anti-virus, try MSE or browse here for opinions:
What's the Best Anti-virus?
You will get many different opinions foisted on you like a religion, so its best you just try something and pick whatever suites you.
Many thanks Golden.

:) I am aware of that and have used it for years, its just that it seems so slow now that I have reinstalled Windows. Maybe its the all the new Windows updates I have installed?
My mistake, I had a look and see I misread your post.
You could try and see if Mailwasher also has any updates pending? I've never used it so not sure why it would be slow. Are all the Windows updates installed?
No worries.
Mailwasher is up-to-date BUT, I just tried updating Windows and I'm back to the 'updates failed to download' again? Very strange?
Many thanks
This is getting weirder! Windows Update will allow me to update IE9 but not install Windows updates? I personally don't use IE, preferring Firefox, but I thought I would just try this. I paused my Kaspersky IS and stopped MalwareBytes but no joy I'm afraid.

Sometimes several reboots will clear the Windows Updates and allow you to install more. If not work through these collected solutions:
Reset Windows Update components
Windows Update - Reset - Windows 7 Forums
Automatically deliver System Update Readiness Tool drivers via Windows Update (Step 3)
System Update Readiness Tool
Establish a Clean Boot and go over your install with Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7
Run SFC /SCANNOW Command
If Updates will still not run, consider a Repair Install.
However since this is a new install, I would again read over Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 to make sure you stuck closely with the steps which assure a perfect install, and if not then wipe the HD with Diskpart Clean Command from the booted installer to do it over.
This time take time between each group of Updates and then later each Program install to check performance to see when/if the issue repeats, so you can pinpoint what caused it. This is actually suggested in the tutorial.
Thanks Greg, that seems to have sorted things and my broadband is back to normal, yipee :)

Glad to hear it Graham.
To help others, which step(s) helped do that?
Yes it would be helpful to me and others if we knew exactly what steps solved your problem.
I have better luck getting Windows Updates if I.E. is set as my default browser.
I rarely use I.E. but Microsoft does like it used. At least in my opinion.
My main browser is Firefox for most everything else.
Just for info:
My two active security programs are
Microsoft Security Essentials
Malwarebytes Anti Malware Professional
I have no idea whether this combination is the best.
Following the proper internet use (do's and don't) and a router along with those two programs has worked well for me for a couple of years that I have had this setup.
