Device manager shows no problems at all. All is fine

"But in Windows 7 if the slider is on any level but mute, there will be no sound."->so mute checkbox is working just the opposite eay as it should be? If so... post that question in a new thread

"And there is this popup that appears everytime I start XP. I will take a camera pick and include that next time because I haven't any idea what it is asking for. Whether I hit OK or Cancel it seems to make no difference."->post camshot. Does is appear before or after logon?

Hello, Greg. No I didn't do a clean reinstall that you asked after in your post. I have a Windows 7 disc that looks to have much of what your tutorial talks about in that this disc is a 48-in-1 with the licensed version being Home Premium 64 bit OEM. So your tutorial will leave me totally lost as I'm not starting with a single Windows 7 version. However, I would like to try out your AV suggestion. It would save money each year for renewals, which would be nice. Are there any special procedures to uninstall Norton Internet Security 2010 or is the simple Control Panel - Remove/Uninstall all that's needed? I have this in both partitions (Windows 7 and XP). What are your thought on Norton Utilities which came as a paired package way back when I bought them?

And as for the weird popup box after logging into windows, here is the screenshot. Sorry for fingerprinty screen but you can still read it.

Start uninstalling NORTON from control panel. Then run the removal tool https://support.norton.com/sp/nl/nl/...rProfile_en_us

Do it on win7 and winxp!

Next install MSE on winxp and win7 for free Microsoft Security Essentials - Microsoft Windows

The popup is for your synaptics touchpad. Remove the checkmark at "Always ask before opening this file". Now click Run. Problem solved?

Well, apparently removing Norton Internet Security 2010 from Control Panel - Remove Programs was insufficient. After rebooting and downloading the Norton Removal Tool and trying to use it I was stopped right off with the message to remove Norton Utilities 14 and Norton Utilities 15 which are in both Windows 7 and XP. I remove the only remaing Norton product from the list which took care of Norton Utilities 14 for both Windows 7 and XP but the Removal Tool is still telling me that Norton Utilities 15 is still on my machine. Applies to both OSs. I don't see any more Norton Programs in the Control Panel - Remove Program list though. Where is Norton Utilities 15 hiding in Windows 7 and XP so that I can zap them and finally remove them with the Removal Tool?

Yes, successfully removed Norton from both. Just Norton Utilities 15 is left. And yes, the popup is no longer taunting me. Thank you.

The disk I have is for Norton Utilities 14. It seems to me that Norton Utilities 15 was picked up as an update because when I went to reinstall, Norton told me that there was already a folder for Norton Utilities 14 and asked if I wanted to use it. I'm gonna have to go through the whole deal again of installing 14, waiting for updates and then uninstalling. I have run out of time for today, I've got a meeting to get to but I will get to it tomorrow morning.

    Thanks, Kaktussoft.

Normally you have to use the removal tool if you got a norton demo version installed automatically when you buy a machine. You bought norton on cd/dvd? A normal uninstall using control panel should be fine.

Did you even read Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7? If so you would see that the very first step provides the official Win7 installer for your licensed version, and the second Step provides a tool to burn it to DVD or write it to flash stick. So I don't know what you're worrying about a 48-in-1 disk you have, whatever that is. If you had questions about this you only needed to ask.

Instead you end up with a Clean Instal of a dead OS (XP) and the worst possible install one can have of Win7, the best OS ever. Hopefully some day you'll get to enjoy Win7 because keeping the Acer pre-install you've never even experienced native Win7 performance.
