Hi pimpstaremre, zigzag doesn't want you to clip and paste your key here .... he's asking if you can type it then clip and paste it in the boxes.

Now, I know that won't work So, yes ... you need to type each letter and number exactly as they appear. If you have any zero's and o's make sure you've typed the correct one.

If you used the installer to wipe out the partitions you should've been fine. Regardless...

Install Windows 7 again over the existing one and assuming your key is legit, it should let you activate after the second install.

I had this same problem. Try it again without any key - just leave it blank. Worked for me.

Those who cannot activate after clean install to formatted HDD with Upgrade media are almost all reporting success by doing an upgrade over the install (repair install) which should then take the key and allow activation from the Computer properties page activation link.

I have been playing phone tag with microsoft for 2 days now. They are being pretty helpful, I wish they would just give me a key that would work so I could really start using my new OS! I tried installing the upgrade over the first install, but still no luck. The tech at microsoft promised me they would make it happen. We shall see! Windows seven rocks though, faster than XP on the same equipment!

Are you saying that after having your key rejected on a clean install from boot, you tried a clean install from boot a second time without the key and it took the key and activated?

This might mean it isnt' necessary to run the Upgrade again over itself (Vista "upgrade over upgrade" trick to clean install) in order to get it to activate.

At what point did you insert the key, after your second attempt when you went to activate on the Properties page?
