Can i install and boot windows 8 on a data partition

I was trying to install a trial version of windows 8 from here Download Windows 8.1 Enterprise Evaluation I wanted to know would it be possible to make a data partition and boot from it in order to test it out before wanting to buy Also would I be able to run my old programs without having to reinstall them ? Thanks

Yes, you sure could dual boot Window 7 and Windows 8 like that if you like. The tutorial below can help show you more details on how to.
Dual Boot Installation - Windows 8 and Windows 7 or Vista
In addition, you could also install Windows 8 in a virtual machine if you like instead.
