Charlie, are you contacting us for Inspiron 1721 with windows Vista?
    1:46:40 PM

    Charile Banks
    yes
    1:47:06 PM

    Priyanka_119128
Do you have the disc for operating system?
    1:47:23 PM

    Charile Banks
Which disc Vista or Windows 7?
    1:47:36 PM

    Priyanka_119128
    Windows 7.
    1:47:39 PM

    Charile Banks
    yes
    1:48:16 PM

    Priyanka_119128
From where did you purchase it?
    1:49:12 PM

    Charile Banks
Microsoft Windows: Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, Windows Live
    1:51:21 PM

    Priyanka_119128
    I see.
    1:52:27 PM

    Priyanka_119128
Charlie, I have checked that the drivers for windows 7 are not available as if now. However they will be soon available on the support website.
    1:52:42 PM

    Priyanka_119128
In the mean time you can continue with installing the drivers for Vista.
    1:52:53 PM

    Charile Banks
I was told that like 6 months ago
    1:53:40 PM

    Charile Banks
Man, since my system is still under warranty can I send it back for another version. cause everything about it is a lie. I can't even go to 64 bit because dell won't release the drivers for that either
    1:54:22 PM

    Priyanka_119128
Charlie, windows 7 was released on 22nd of October. Hence the drivers for windows 7 will be released soon.
    1:54:37 PM

    Priyanka_119128
I assure you that the drivers will definitely be released soon.

    1:58:21 PM

    Charile Banks
    Hello?
    1:58:47 PM

    Priyanka_119128
Charlie, I would not like to set any wrong expectations.
    1:59:12 PM

    Priyanka_119128
However once you install windows 7 and install windows updates, it automatically install the drivers.
    1:59:55 PM

    Priyanka_119128
Moreover the disc was not purchased from Dell, I would recommend you to contact our Dell on Call Department which is a paid support for all such software issues. They will help you with it.
    2:00:00 PM

    Charile Banks
It won't let me install windows 7 because it says: Install updated drivers for the following devices. Open Control Panel and search for "update device drivers".

Charlie, I would recommend you to contact Dell on call department and they will help you in installing the operating system and the drivers and I assure you that your system will be up and running.

    Priyanka_119128
If you wish I can connect you to the Dell on Call department.
    2:01:48 PM

    Charile Banks
I'm still under warranty im not paying dell for the Hardware issue, so the paid support idea can go straight to hell.
    2:02:11 PM

    Charile Banks
Hell nah. Excuse my language but I shouldn't have to call Dell about this when the drivers should be accessible
    2:02:41 PM

    Charile Banks
if dell is going that broke, as they have been doing really bad in the numbers, cheating people out of there drivers isn't fair.
    2:03:15 PM

    Charile Banks
I'm so sick of all the excuses i keep getting about eveything. The Window 7 drivers, The Vista 64 drivers

The system is covered under hardware warranty and we are always here to assist you to for any issue related to hardware. However the disc was not purchased from Dell. Also Dell on call department will help you in installing the operating system and making your system up and running.
    2:04:15 PM

    2:06:11 PM

    Charile Banks
This system isn't compatible with anything...wth were they thinking when they made it? It says 64 bit capable when advertise, but yet there is no drivers to make them 64 bit.
    2:11:10 PM

    Priyanka_119128
Charlie, the system is compatible to windows 7. Since it has been just a few days since windows 7 is relapsed. Hence it will take some time for the drivers to be released.
    2:11:20 PM

    Charile Banks
I don't want money back, and it's still like new, can I send it back for a different version that is mroe compatible or 64bit. this laptop was $1800 and I got it because I was told that it can be switch to 64bit but I should 32bit until 64 becomes more user friendly.
    2:11:20 PM

    Priyanka_119128
You can definitely install windows 7 on this system.
    2:11:29 PM

    Charile Banks
    What about windows 7 64bit?
    2:12:34 PM

    Priyanka_119128
Charlie, the system is not compatible for Vista 64 bit.
    2:12:53 PM

    Charile Banks
Then why does it say 64 bit compatible?
    2:13:14 PM

    Priyanka_119128
Similarly, windows 7 64 bit will also not be compatible.
    2:13:29 PM

The system that you have is Inspiron 1721 and it only support Vista 32-bit and not 64-bit
    2:24:05 PM

    Priyanka_119128
We have checked the tools at our end and provided you the necessary information
    2:25:18 PM

    Charile Banks
And he also told me I would have to do a clean install to switch to 64 bit
    2:25:18 PM

    Priyanka_119128
As far as the availability of drivers for Windows 7 is concerned I really dont want to provide you any wrong information. We dont have an expected time of when Windows 7 drivers for this system would be available.
    2:26:00 PM

    Priyanka_119128
Yes you surely can do a clean install of 64-bit on your machine. But the machine has not been designed for 64-bit OS.
    2:26:27 PM

    Charile Banks
Make up your mind. Can it go to 64 bit or Can it not?
    2:26:53 PM

    Charile Banks
Priyanka_119128 I am afraid to inform you that I have checked the entire system information and no where it shows that it is compatible to windows 64 bit.
    2:26:53 PM

    Priyanka_119128
This machine has not been designed for 64-bit and that's what I have been telling you from the beginning.
    2:27:08 PM

    Charile Banks
    u said that
    2:27:25 PM

    Priyanka_119128
That's what I just said Charlie.
    2:27:29 PM

    Charile Banks
Priyanka_119128 in my records it says that it is only compatible to 32 bit.
    2:27:31 PM

    Charile Banks
    andthat
    2:27:51 PM

    Priyanka_119128
    That's very correct
    2:28:18 PM

    Charile Banks
So it's not compatible, but I can go to 64 bit?
    2:29:01 PM

    Charile Banks
2:12:34 PM Priyanka_119128 Charlie, the system is not compatible for Vista 64 bit.
2:12:53 PM Charile Banks Then why does it say 64 bit compatible?
2:13:14 PM Priyanka_119128 Similarly, windows 7 64 bit will also not be compatible

    2:29:21 PM

    Priyanka_119128
That's correct. We haven't tested/designed this machine for 64-bit OS so you might face some performance related issues
    2:30:43 PM

    Charile Banks
So it's not that it isn't compatible it's that dell haven't tested it 64 bit wise. So its you that need to be more professional about information other than worried about my abbrevations.
    2:30:43 PM

    Priyanka_119128
So as a Dell technician I would advise you to use only 32-bit of Vista and install 32-bit Windows 7 on availability.
    2:31:21 PM

    Priyanka_119128
Charlie, my intent is to provide you all the correct information.
    2:31:53 PM

    Priyanka_119128
Is there anything else you would like me to help you with today?
    2:32:02 PM

    Charile Banks
But you didn't. You told me it wasn't compitable. Now your saying it's because dell didn't test it.
    2:32:22 PM

    Charile Banks
Look I know this isn't really you're problem when it comes to the core of it
    2:32:30 PM

    Charile Banks
    This is ur job
    2:32:41 PM

    Priyanka_119128
Charlie, the system is not compatible for vista 64-bit and that's what I have been telling you from the very beginning.
    2:33:14 PM

    Charile Banks
It's not compatible but I can install a 64 bit
    2:33:53 PM

    Charile Banks
Can I send it back for a different version? Because I see 1721 64bit version on the site
    2:34:16 PM

    Priyanka_119128
No Charlie, that is not an option.
    2:34:31 PM

    Charile Banks
But u said I can clean install 64 bit
    2:34:37 PM

    Charile Banks
    so there is an option
    2:35:16 PM

    Priyanka_119128
You surely can install vista 64-bit but we dont guarantee if the system would work optimally or not.
    2:35:30 PM

    Priyanka_119128
The system has only been designed for vista 32-bit and not 64-bit.
    2:35:41 PM

    Charile Banks
Okaky here is what I'm trying to ask Priyanka
    2:36:01 Pm

    Charile Banks
Clean install wise it'll boot up 64, your just saying ur not sure if all the drivers would work right
    2:36:16 PM

    Charile Banks
or the mouse or the sound things like that
    2:36:25 PM

    Priyanka_119128
There are no drivers available for 64-bit OS for this system
    2:36:45 PM

    Priyanka_119128
That's correct and you got it right
    2:37:01 PM

    Charile Banks
Is there any chance that there will be drivers?
    2:37:06 PM

    Charile Banks
    for the 64 bit portion
    2:37:40 PM

    Priyanka_119128
No Charlie this system is not been designed for vista 64-bit so 64-bit drivers wouldn't be available for this system
    2:38:56 PM

    Charile Banks
Do you know if I can send my system back for a different version because I bought it based on the knowledge that I can successfully go to 64 bit
    2:39:31 PM

    Priyanka_119128
My apologies but you cannot return this system.
    2:39:33 PM

    Charile Banks
I mean it can be the same 1721 or the same laptop if you guys just need to change the hardware. but itfeels like I was really ripped off bad
    2:39:46 PM

    Charile Banks
    cause there are 1721 64bits
    2:39:48 PM

    Charile Banks
    on the site
    2:39:59 PM

    Charile Banks
don't see why mine is any different
    2:41:01 PM

    Priyanka_119128
Charlie, in my records, irrespective of the service tag, it shows that Inspiron 1721 is only designed for Vista 32 bit. Hence whosoever will have Inspiron 1721 will not be able to install 64 bit.
    2:41:46 PM

    Priyanka_119128
That is why the drivers for 64 bit are yet not available on the support Website.

I just got another call from Coporate, apologizing telling me they still recommend me staying with 32bit.

If my computer is go off like a bomb when I switch to 64 bit they just need to tell me.

All this "I recommend you stay 32bit" is kinda creeping me out.

    B3astiie,
I read through your chat. So it's not compatible, then it is, then it isn't.
It's probably not much consolation but I can say with a clear conscience after dealing with Dell for many, many years with many, many computers (mine and others') that 99% of the support reps. don't know what they are talking about (particularly the Home and Home Office channel). They read from a script.

Chat with them again or call them. You might get a different answer. If that doesn't satisfy you, call them back. Keep at it.

Who knows, maybe the 1721 won't run 64-bit windows. That may be due to the AMD processor.

It looks like someone has tried Vista x64 on the 1721. I found this post in the Dell Community Forums: Inspiron 1721 microphone driver for Vista 64 bit - DELL COMMUNITY

Yes I've tried getting in touch with him and he never responded. I think Dell might of snatched him. lol.

My AMD processer is a 64 bit Processor. And The Advisor says I can run 64bit. When I try to install the 64bit version of 7, it completes, come backs to load windows. The Windows 7 icon comes up, looks like it's gonna go good. then a quick blue screen, then a restart and a error saying Windows could finish installation. And it begans to roll back.

But mayeb Dells right, I can, but I can't, but it will, but it won't.

What annoyed me is they admitting to having the 64bit drivers but not testing them yet. Is it really that difficult to test it and get it over with?

Okay you guys 1721 problem solve. I know exactly what to do, I have just did it and it worked.

It involved some of the stuff Walman told us about. I will be writing a step by step guide. Give me about an hour.

It worked with no problem at all.

Go to the link below and download the Display Driver, AHCI Driver and Raid Driver. Follow my map so you won't be too confused. It's right under the link.

    Drivers & Support | GAME.AMD.COM

The Display Driver can be found under: ATI Radeon Video Card Drivers > Indivisual Catalyst Components > Windows 7 link.

AHCI and Raid Driver can be found under: Mother Board/Intergrated Video Drivers > Indivisual Driver(MotherBoard/Chipset) > Windows 7 link.

Next you will need a flash driver, cd, or floppy because you are going to copy the driver there. But please keep reading, because we are not going to copy the catalyst, we are going to go straight into the folders and get the drivers.

Next go in your C drive. Go to ATI. Go to Support. All your drivers are there. Now find only the ones you downloaded for this installation, should be no more then 3. Ahci, raid (don't really need this one) and Display.

Go into the folders. Then go to packages, then drivers, keep clicking the right folder till u get to the name of the driver you looking for. Here I'll map out the route. I'm going straight to the 32bit drivers, so common sense should be able to tell you how to find the 64.

Alright, the first folder you will have to work your way into is the 9-10_vista32_win7_32_dd folder.

Click 9-10_9-10_vista32_win7_32_dd > packages > drivers > display: (You ill see a W7_INF (32bit) and/or W76A_INF (64bit) folder, copy one of the two to your flash, disk or floppy.

Now the next folder will be 9-10_win7_32_64_ahci so...

    Click 9-10_win7_32-64_ahci > packages > drivers >SBDrv > SB7xx > AHCI (You will see the folder W7 (32bit) and/or W764A (64bit) copy one of the two to a flash, cd or floppy).

Last but not least if you need it the raid driver. We will not be loading this driver but you should put it on your flash incase u need it after installation.)

Click 9-10_win7_32-64_raid > packages > apps > VC8RTx86 > vcredist_x86 > (you can copy this on you flash for after you install windows it will not load as a driver).

Alright, so after you saved the drivers to a flash, floppy or burned it to a disc. Run windows setup. Click the version you want, click clean install (don't worry, it will save all ur old files and programs to a folder titled 'windowsold'.) Select the partition you will like to use so windows can temporary install it self on while its setting up. (I recommend drive C anything else may screw things up). DO NOT CLICK NEXT!

Now, you will notice at the bottom of the same drive choosing screen you see something that says load drivers. This is where ur display and ahci driver will come into place.

Click load driver, click browse in the pop up, go to whatever you use to load your drivers on. (if you used a cd, it is okay to take the windows 7 cd out and put the cd in you put the drivers on. but after we load all the drivers, before anything put the windows 7 cd back in and let it run for a few seconds to catch up).

Once you have clicked brows click on which ever you saved the drivers to. Click the AHCI folder, you should see either a another folder that says 'W7' (32bit) or 'WT64A (64bite). click which ever one you are trying to install then hit okay.

Drivers will come up under the Select driver to be installed. If you do not see drivers, that's okay because on some laptops you will have to uncheck the box right over the browse button that says "Hide drivers that are not compatible with hardware on this computer." (they are, just not tested yet which is why we have the AHCI RAID CONTROLLER PROBLEM).

Alright there should be two drivers. Click on the first one, hit next. A warning or something may pop up, just click okay. It takes you back to drive select screen, make sure its on the C driver again and hit load driver. Go back to the same folder and load the second one.

Next we gotta do the second set of drivers. So go to load driver, browse, look for the'W7' (32bit) or 'WT64A' (64bit) folder. There will be three drivers. remember if you do not see three you will need to uncheck the "Hide drivers that are not compatiable with hardware aon this computer," box. Load all three just like you did the other two.
Note: It will not show what drivers you loaded, but they will be loaded.

Finally, like normal after you load the last driver you go back to select drive screen, again make sure C is selected and click next. Hopefully you are on your way to a succesful installation of Windows7.

Let me know if any part of this confused and I'll be glad to help you. Any question just post or hit me up on yahoo.

    B3astiie,

Thanks for the guide but im still stuck.. I'm guessing you're installing from wndows vista rather than a clean install. I got the drivers, booted onto the windows 7 DVD, and loaded all of the drivers you recommended but the installation still cant find any hdd to install it on! Any idea whats going on?!

I've added you on yahoo, but i dont know if we will be in time sync as im in the UK...

    Cheers

    Chrs

    Hey bro,

I'm on now and will be on yahoo for the rest of the day. I added you. And I know what your problem is.

Dell has made it to where the drives are hidden if you try to do a clean install, while booting from the CD. So unless you format the drives you will not see them when trying to boot and install from the cd.

The best bet is while your in windows, put the CD in, (right now if you want) pick which version you want, then choose custom install. Which is the same as clean, except it saves all you old programs and fails to a folder called, 'Windows.Old" so you can use after installation.
