    1. You cannot make another primary because you already have 3 primaries plus 1 extended partition. That is the maximum. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO PLAY WITH IT. You will regret it because all your partitions would be converted to dynamics - a real problem.

    2. You do not need a primary partition to install XP. A logical partition will be OK because the XP bootmgr will go into your D partition. That looks like the 'active' partition. Check in Disk Management.

    3. On any system you really only need 1 primary partition - for the 'active' partition.

I think you have a Sata driver problem in your XP installer. Why don't you install XP in a virtual partition. That is a LOT easier and has many advantages.

Watch my little video running Windows 8 in a virtual partition. It would be the same for XP.

I am not an expert on that because I never used XP. I think you have to slipstream a Sata driver on the XP installation disk. But I don't know the details.

I suggest you start a new thread with the title: " Problems when trying to install XP SP3 on a Sata HDD ". Then describe your problem. I am sure other members will know what to do.

Sorry I cannot be of more help - but I still think an installation into a virtual partition would be the easiest solution. With that I could help you.

    1. Download and install VMware Player

    Download VMware Player 6.0.1 - FileHippo.com

    2. Have a look at this tutorial. It was made for a Linux system but it is the same for XP. Just select XP. Don't worry about the videos and the VMware Tools.
