    Thanks for the info.

Too bad they all don't have recovery partition and re-install DVD without all the garbage on them.

    There is not much risk.

I found the number on the bottom of the machine can activate Windows of the corresponding XP or Vista ( I did that with my IBM notebooks)

I also did a downgrade from Vista to XP on my Sony notebook. The activation product key was built-in the XP recovery discs, I use a key finder and extracted that out after installation.

My machine got eaten by virus badly. I then install a Retail version of XP instead from a recovery CD.

The Key did not work !!! That is correct, the product key extracted from the manufacturer recovery CD does not activate a retail version of the same.

Then I called Microsoft and explained to them I had a Windows Vista license came with the machine and I downgraded it to XP with the manufacturer supplied CD discs. But my machine got corrupted and I did not want to reformat my disc with the recovery CD and since I had a Windows XP retail version disc and used that to repaired my machine but it was no longer activated.

I was asked for the OEM product key. It was a valid key in a sense it was supplied by the manufacturer. Microsoft was kind enough to give me another key which could be use to active my machine. It worked and I was told to safe keep that key in case I ran into problem with the machine again. I was very happy.

So if you have a legit Windows license, Microsoft is not as bad as some of us thought.

    Hi all,

Sorry it's taken so long to reply, been playing with the sony drivers etc.

My iso that I had downloaded (7 home premium), turned out to be an 'N' version, tried it and at the product key screen it rejected the key, saying something about the SKU not matching, so I had to find another iso, but couldn't find an oem version, there pretty hard to find in x64 form, anyway, downloaded a good 'retail' home premium x64 to try that and it works.

When I entered the product key during installation everything went fine, but when it tried to automatically activate itself it gave a message saying that, it wasn't possible to activate the license online, and to use the phone method of activation, which I did, and so far everything is working fine.

On a different note, I have got everything working on the vaio (function keys, correct drivers etc.), the only things I want but can't find are the vaio gate installer, and the splashtop browser, so if anybody knows where I can get these from, or, how to extract them from the recovery discs then please let me know.

None of the blue function keys in my VAIO works, so you are ahead of me.

The keys on stickers now are batch keys, but you can read your actual key by using Belarc Advisor ahead of time, then wait until after installation to insert it at Computer>properties activation link.

Most times MS activation will take the specific key read from the M'board and auto-activate, but sometimes MS computers wonder why it wasn't given the batch key so it could sort it out itself, so it will have you do a robo-call to trade a bunch of numbers.

There are always trade-offs when doing a clean reinstall, so you'll need to be on the lookout for that specfic software if you can't do without it. But I've never found I couldn't do without manufacturer's bloatware, whether friendly or just bloaty.

Check the model's product download page, google the app's name every which way, try to access the single app(s) on app disk, call your manufacturer and pose hypotheticals about how you would obtain just those apps "if" you were to do a clean reinstall - never admit it outright as they rarely support clean reinstalls, even sometimes require full factory recovery to service hardware warranty.

I find that if I call enough, am friendly enough, I will come across someone who will let it slip how to accomplish what I want. Or someone on Google already has.

This is the plight of the clean reinstaller in an age where sponsored bloatware provides most makers' profit margin.

Hi m8, that took a bit of working out but quite easy really, have uploaded the required files to skydrive for you, link below, but all are available from the sony support site, just a matter of knowing which one's are required.

Install in this order though, 1.event service, 2.control centre, 3.settings utility, all in the oem drivers file, then extract the bare drivers file and in your device manager you should have an unknown non working device, choose to install a driver for it, and browse to the folder you just extracted, it will install the correct driver, when done reboot and your keys will work.
