Went into Windows, there were updates, started to install them, walked away for a while, came back and a couple didn't install.
    Hit restart.
'Reboot and select proper boot media'

    haha....

I did not do the regedit I mentioned above.

software can only be used as an upgrade.
Do the Option 3 workaround in Clean Install with a Upgrade Windows 7 Version.

I agree it sounds like you have more serious (hardware) problems than activation, but that is a correctable error using the workaround above. So do it to see how it helps.

Please bear in mind that I think there is something wrong with this board because I've been chasing problems for a month at least.
Let's say this copy of Win is not genuine, why would it BSOD? Why is it that whenever there is some sort of change Win boots into Sys repair, I restore, Win says it cannot fix the problem and I have to shut down. 9 times out of 10 I can boot right back into Windows?! That is simply bizarre behavior.

I will grab the code and see what happens.
At this point i am inclined to say you are possibly right. Especially if the board was only 50 bucks. a system board that inexpensive is probably more likely than not gonna give you headaches. You probably would be better off investing in a better system board unless you just intended on this being a very basic pc; in which case a 50 dollar board is probably gonna be about as basic as you can get.

    Merry Christmas to y'all

If my problems are board related then why are you suggesting I beat this dead horse even more? Or am I misreading and you're saying that tutorial might deal w/the hardware issues.

Still...no one answers this question is activation causing this pc to BSOD? If not, then there is no other alternative then 'this board is FREAKING out' and needs to be returned or office space'd

I have an FM1 chip which shows about 15 boards on newegg and they are all fairly cheap. Suggestions?

There are a lot more on amazon. Where do y'all buy your stuff?

I buy most of my stuff through Newegg and TigerDirect. Some from Amazon.
You can get the exact same product from any of them, they all have decent return policies, and they take care in the shipping.
It is more about the manufacturer and the particular product than it is the retailer. Your best defense against poor products is to read the customer reviews carefully. Mostly the complainers post reviews, skewing all products towards the negative, but what you are looking for is that consistent complaint, ie: can't get driver to install, or something like that. One complaint could be a noob, 3 complaints could be a problem.

People like myself will suggest you try all the free stuff (yeah, your labor - but no cash) like tests and re-installations first before buying new parts - just to rule out all other possible causes first.
But sometimes you go with your gut. If something smells funny, don't eat it. In this case, if you got that feeling that you've done everything right but something just ain't right with that board, don't keep it!

I've switched to Amazon because if they ship a defective item you can return it in 30 days and they will pay shipping. My experience with the Egg is they charge 15% and I have to pay return shipping. If I choose the option for replacement they drop the 15% but I still pay to ship the bad piece back.

Yeah I am a review junkie and I expect that Amazon will be naming their new building "The ChrisPbass Division" because of my fam's purchases though them.

I like newegg for their reviews. You get a lot of people who obviously know what they're talking about and you can tell if someone is trashing a product simply because it was defective.

unlike a number of the others; i got my components with the exception of my monitor and speaker setup locally from a place that specializes in selling components etc. I might try locally to see if there are any places around you with better boards etc. but in the end; no; activation should not give a bsod like that.

I am the type to buy semi-old technology to save costs. Reviews of the board I bought were good so I thought it would, ya know, work and such...but now I am not seeing a whole lot of FM1 boards out there...
Any ideas? Amazon has some. I want USB3 and would like SATA III but that's not a requirement. I would like at least 3 SATA ports but can add a PCI-e SATA board if necessary. The case is Rosewill R363-M-BK Black Ultra High Gloss Finished MicroATX Computer Case with 400W ATX 2.2 12V Power Supply - Newegg.com. Says it's microATX.
