    I:

    cmd/run as admin
    list disk
    select disk 2
    clean all

Now there is a blinking horizontal line or cursor in cmd under the clean all command. Is that normal?
I understand this takes a LONG time which is fine w/me.

BTW (in case anyone cares ) I bought a new case, a Zalman Z9, it's much bigger and easier to work in and has drive bays that DO NOT smash the drives into your memory. I thought that was a nice touch. Much quieter as well.

    Yes, normal.
There is no progress bar or any other indication that it is working. Be patient and don't stop it!
Remain at least 2 arms length away from the PC until it finishes!

A nice case is the second most important component IMHO!

    It's shiny.

What's bizarre about this case is that it ALSO (same as Rosewill case) does NOT have a standoff at the one corner of the board where the 5 SATA plugs reside. There is a hole at that corner of the MB but it does not have the metal/solder/whatever that all the screw holes have, which I assume its for grounding purposes. Also, the hole is very close to one of the SATA ports. So close that it actually doesn't seem like a screw would fit in it.
It does have a standoff fairly close to that corner.

Diskpart Clean All takes hours and is only needed to render data unrecoverable by all but forensic means. The command you want is Diskpart Clean Command which takes seconds and wipes out the partition table which is all that's needed to clear the disk for reuse with it being unable to interfere in any way.

In your case you only want to clear the GPT formatting to repartition MBR, correct? You can do that in Disk Mgmt by rightclicking the Disk number panel to Convert to MBR. Convert GPT Disk to MBR Disk - Windows 7 Forums

This is the typical locations for standoffs in the 1.1 version of the Micro ATX specification:

Note that there is no standoff in the location you reference. So a case made to the 1.1 specification will not have a standoff hole there.

It is curious that the ASRock board does have a hole there. I wonder if they are working off a different specification? If they are, they should say so!

Yeah...so...It's up and running and I can't think of doing anything else to it!
It sure was easy building this when the MB actually worked but I did learn a ton from y'all so I'm thankful for that.

I still need to activate Windows so we'll see how that goes

So the punchline of the story, if anyone ever actually reads all this, is 'the motherboard was faulty and quite possibly the DVD drive.' oy.

Congrats on sorting it all out and learning is always fun even though it can be stressful at moments. Get us some pictures when you can and good luck with the rest of the OS and software !
