Migrating from the RTM to release?

Hi all. I've been running the RTM version of Win7 64bit (I went with Home Premium) since July or so and (as planned) my rearms are running out this month meaning it's time to make my Win7 purchase.

Will I be able to buy Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade and use it's product key in my RTM install, or will I need to get a non-upgrade version? Ideally I would like to just click "activate" in my installed version then enter in a valid (ie- legally purchased) key and be done with it.

If you want it to be that simple then you will probably need the full version. Because I don't think you will be able to activate a full install of HP with an upgrade key (at least not without some tricks).

There is a slightly more complex way to go from the RTM to retail upgrade version. Here's a link:

Clean Install with a Upgrade Windows 7 Version

Now, if you want to go from the RTM (Ultimate) to something like Home Premium or Professional, that is a bit more complex. Briefly, a Windows 7 Ultimate Installation can normally not change into a minor version of "Windows 7 Home Premium" or "Professional".

If you have installed a preview version of Windows 7 Ultimate (e.g. beta, release candidate build 7100 or RTM build 7600) and want to install a cheaper version Windows 7 Home Premium or Professional the installation is refused, but with a change of a registry key while installing you can fake a minor version - so you can install the minor version.

    Go to
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion

    Change

EditionID from Ultimate to what you have a key for (Professional or HOMEPREMIUM)

ProductName from Windows 7 Ultimate to either Windows 7 Professional or Windows 7 HOMEPREMIUM

A re-boot after change of these registry keys is not necessary. (The version name to be entered must be identical to the version name on the installation DVD.)

For downgrading do not boot from Windows 7 installation DVD. Boot to Windows 7 and start "Setup.exe" from DVD; or after loading DVD the setup process starts automatically.

I have done it both ways with no problems.
