Dual boot with XP that now doesnt provide option

I now have under disk 1

Unallocated space - 1500gb
E: data
c: Windows 7

I tried to copy across C drive to unallocated space and it named it B: and contained bootmgr etc as well as C; I wasnt sure what to do at this stage so just deleted that partition again to create the unallocated space.

When I boot up now all seems fine. it takes about 90 secs from presing the on button to ready to work. Does this seem ok? Also when the main screen comes up it flicks to black a few times and back to windows main screen?

I wouldnt settle for that startup time myself, should be around 30 seconds.

It will take more troubleshooting to get the C: drive copied over to first partition, and there is no guarantee it will improve the lagging performance, so....

I would back up my files, boot from the installer, choose Custom install, Advanced tools, delete the Windows 7 partition you have, create a partition in that unallocated space to the left of your data, format, and install windows there.

Will check in when I wake up tomorrow here in Calif.

Does that boot up time seem slow then. That is from pressing the button and loading up my scanner which it automatically does (you can hear it click) and MSN messenger and the other screen that comes with it.

I thought it seemed pretty fast compared to when it was running XP.

I will check the reboot time using that utility on another page and see what that time says

Many thanks for all the assistance. Having got it working now and installed a number of programs I am a bit nervous deleting the partition again and having to do another install to gain a few seconds on boo up but if there are other gains to be had I can do

It only matters that you are happy with it.

Since you want to keep this one, make reinstalling a thing of the past by using Win7's great backup imaging to create and store externally an image that can restore your HDD in 15 mins.

I check Run>msconfig>Startup programs a lot to get the freeloaders off my startup time.

After first install I uncheck them all (except MS ones) and then add them back if I realize I need them to startup, but have come to realize I don't need any that bad I can't just start them after the computer starts up. They are free riders otherwise.

Next time you decide to clean install, remember you have that first partition space (which is always a hair faster for the laser) to install to. You can even keep the current install around long enough to copy files over via explorer, and browse from Device Manager for drivers to windows/system32/driverstore/filerepository - very cool.
