Win 7 Install problem

I received my Windows 7 upgrade disk an all seemed to go well untill it hit the "Transfering files, settings and programs" screen and now it seems to have stopped. It doesn't seem to be frozen the mouse moves and I see the hard drive light come on and off but thats as far as it goes for over 2 hours now. This is an I7 machine that's only a couple of months old and Vista 64 ran fine. I did an upgrade as opposed to a clean install since I'd rather not lose everything on that pc. I used the Windows 7 upgrade advisor and the only issue I couldn't fix was with the Gigabyte Bbb36x controler driver. I loaded the one recommened by Gigabyte which was newer than what Microsofts update gave me. (Tried them both neither of which met with the upgrade advisors approval). Question is where do I go from here. Do I just let it run to see if its acually doing something just slowly, or do I try something more desparate?

I knew I was going to upgrade this machine when I bought it, so I didn't think I put that much on it. Apparently I put more on it than I thought. The "Installing devices" and "Please wait" notes keep popping up, so I guess something is happening. I missed the 20 hour notice from ms. Thanks for the reply.

I was inpressed with all the people that were saying that it only took them 15 or 20 minutes. Really should have deleated those games I guess. Of course I didn't back up like I should have. I thought I had my bases covered and when I had trouble installing Vista on another pc, it just stopped and put everything back. I do have some back ups, just not as recent as I should. So if it really is stopped, what do you think. Just reboot and see what happens?

Anyone taking 20 minutes to install Win7 Upgrade was doing a clean install, probably from boot, which you can still do to get the cleanest possible install.

Where did your install seem to sit for all that time. I'm getting real tired of seeing the blue screen and a bird.

I thought I turned off Norton, but I may have just turned off the firewall not the antivirus. Would this cause my problem?

The Norton ubervirus could certainly bollix an in-place Upgrade which is why they tell you to shut it down.

Since you have that insidious virus and it is impossible to remove without damaging system files anyway, I suggest you boot from disk, delete all partitions, create new ones as you wish, then format and install to first partition.

Afterwards download free Avast Home which is featherlight and, after it's initial boot scan, will let nothing bad in unless you turn it off.
