Easy transfer drive mapping

I am having issuse with an XP-win 7 upgrade.

When I use WET utility it tries to install all my files onto my small C:drive. The original .mig file comes from a computer with C: J: K: drives... the new comp just has C: and D:.

Why isn't it giving me an option to map the drives when I upgrade?

It tries to install on C drive then gives up when it runs out of space.

When I look at the map drive tab in WET it says 'no drives are available for mapping.'

Help!

I don't want to spam the forum - but if I can't fix this issue I am in big trouble.

All I wan t to do is put the .mig file in the location of my choosing - how hard can it be???

The Map Drives tab / section is blanked out and I also run out of space on Drive C even though there is enough space and the drive states so in My Computer.

I can restore my user profile but not my other files that were on my C drive with Vista that I backed up before the Win 7 upgrade.

Some background:

I went from Vista 32bit to Win 7 64bit clean install, using same hardware and drives.

I backed the .MIG file up to my external seagate drive to recover to C when Win 7 was on it, and the above happens to me too.

I have tried the leaked MigRecover tool that can be found online (I have tried version 3 and the recent 4 too) and both extract my data but as numbered "files" that have no folder structure or file extensions! This is obviously bad as there are thousands of files (we are talking 400gb). I'm left with just a few ok files in folders and about 20 corrupt files amongst thousands of ok but numbered and un-extensioned files. The leaked MigRecover also creates a new catalog.mig and a .dat file that lists the original paths for the files etc. Can I possibly do anything with them?!

I should have just dragged and dropped in hindsight and I normally would, so I don't know what I was thinking using 'easy' (lol) transfer wizard.

Can anyone help us please?!

I spent a lot of time with 2 different microsoft support guys on this over about 2 weeks.... the upshot was they couldn't help. It's a fundamental issue with this type of transfer - typical microsoft idiocy.

My solution in the end was far from satisfactory.... but it at least got my files back.

I used WET to transfer my files to a spare laptop that I had with Vista on it. This let me map drives so I put all the files I was wanting into a partition.

I then transferred the files from the laptop to my desktop with Win 7 through my network.

If you have a spare computer in the house with half decent hard drive capacity then you could do the same - possibly in 2 batches if you have a lot of files to transfer.

Personally I wish I had never heard of windows easy (sic) transfer utility. Piece of *&$£ wasted a day of my life.
