same problem no dual boot with win xp
Hi this is my first post here and I am glad to have found this useful forum. I have the same problem with a new clean installation of Windows 7 64 bit hanging after all steps of installation except boot up to the OS (i.e., like 75% completed and hangs after final reboot of system). I am also dual booting from separate hard drives. My XP SP3 32bit home edition is on my Raptor drive and Win 7 64 was installed onto the brand new Vertex SSD after clean format. I have run the upgrade advisor with no real hardware issues other than it indicates that my GTX 295 is not aero compliant (??). Some things to help:
1. I purchased the 64bit edition via a download with a licence key and made the ISO boot disc
2. all SATA drives are set a legacy IDE mode (I have not tried ICHA mode becasue it seems one can lock onself out of the BIOS this way (??)
3. Three reinstalls of the Win 7 OS have not helped and 1 reformat of the SSD
4. XP boots up fine when selected during POST
5. I have flashed to the most recent BIOS for my Mobo (F12)
6. I have set my system OC back to default and reinstalled with no luck
7. I have NOT tried taking out my GTX 295 and booting up in Win 7 (hope to avoid this if possible but will do if necessary)
8. I have unplugged all USB devices and reinstalled to no avail
That's about it. I would really appreciate any feedback to help as it has been very frustrating and especailly with the new SSD. I am Jonsing to get Win 7 working on it.

thanks but why would this differ from a USB key. I beleive my DVD to be fine and was burt at 2x.

There's plenty of reasons, one of them being the burning of the DVD. It's an unnecessary step and prone to failure.
Also, contrary to popular belief, the fastest speed to burn is best because the drive is designed to burn that way.
My advice is make a USB key and it will save you lots of trouble....like I said, for reasons other than just a bad burn.

solved windows 7 hang on final installation
Hi. Thanks all for the suggestions here. Unfortunately, the USB drive install made not difference. I always suspected my video driver was the culprit and I was right. I solved my installation with the help of this post below. It really worked well and after installing the latest Nvidia drivers for my GTX 295, I am in the money. Now I have a stable overclocked dual boot system and I am enjoying Win7 with TRIM functionality for my SSD. Life is good. MS needs to fix this issue however as many of us have high end video cards and spending a week trying to install their product is not a good way to sell Win 7. Nonetheless it is a very nice OS.
In the instructions below I left mine to the balnk screen and hit reset and selected Win 7 from the dual boot menu and then got the ioptiond for booting in safe mode, but here I hit shift f10 and she worked for me and I followed the reamining instructions. excellent!
The solution is as posted by Zidane in the following post and further elaborated from another post that I have lost the link to.

Let me copy his solution here and add a couple of useful comments for anyone else reading this:
IF YOU REACH A BLACK SCREEN WITH A CURSOR DURING THE WINDOWS 7 INSTALL THE FOLLOWING COULD HELP.
When installing Windows 7 let it get to the part where it reboots (for the second time) just after the' completing installation' stage. When it restarts press F8 and boot the new install in safe mode.
Alternatively leave the install running until you reach the 'black screen' and do a hard reboot (hold power for 5 seconds). On restart you'll be asked if you want to boot into safe mode, click 'yes'.
While booting in safe mode you'll eventually get an error saying "setup cannot continue in safe mode. click ok to reboot". don't press OK!. Press shift F10 and type "compmgmt.msc" and hit enter. When the computer management screen comes up go to device manager and disable the video card (not uninstall it). You will still get video so don't worry.
Close device manager and click 'ok' on the message and continue the install as normal, alternatively just do a reset. When the machine reboots this time you should have video, albeit it at a crippled resolution.Last edited by TheEggman; 26 Nov 2009 at 19:16. Reason: mistype

Black screen with cursor flashing during Win7 install is becoming a daily thing here.
Zidane's fix works often enough it should be stickied.
Hopefully this will help bump it on Google.
