Hello an welcome GS mate I would not be holding my breath re getting the old system back this might help - it is a factory restore method but it will leave you with the system as it was when you got the machine. http://www.google.com.au/url?sa=t&rc...ZJZCvnST4Ui6hA

Hopefully you have your data backed up and can get it back.

Another avenue to pursue is this Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 - you must use the correct version so if you had Home Premium on it you must pick the ISO for it and you just activate by using the code that is on the sticker under the machine. (Don't forget to pick the right language too)
The best bit about this method is that you get rid of all the bloatware that Dell (or any brand) put on their machines as a matter of course.

As for the other someone I would be keeping he or she away from this machine.

This is the download you'd want for that Dell: Win7 Home Premium x64 SP1 English Official ISO download

Burn to DVD or flash stick with tool in Step 2 of Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7.

Then follow the steps in the tutorial closely and you'll have a perfect install. Be sure to read the Special Notes of Dell Owners at the end so you can preserve the useful onboard Dell Diagnostics, but you can delete all other partitions during the install since they will no longer be needed.

Pay close attention to the steps in red for how to handle drivers.

Ask back any questions you have.

If you have Win7 Professional then use Win7 Professinoal x64 English Official ISO Download

Continue with the steps for Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7.

Don't forget to the read the Special Note for Dell Owners at end.

Test the Dell Diagnostics by booting with F12 key, choose Diagnostics and run them to completion. Then boot back into F12 and choose Utility partition to see if it also has other diagnostics to test, run them to completion. If these work then I would keep the first partition but during the install delete all other partitions after the first one, create and format a new partition to install Win7.

Ask back if you have any questions.

You could do an Anytime Upgrade to Ultimate and install the French Language Pack, or you can try installing to a test partition French Win7 for your licensed version, see if it will activate. We can walk you through doing either.
