XPS M1530 Win-7 Intel Chipset Install Question

    Hello,

I'm installing Win-7 x64 on a new HD on my Dell XPS M1530 and was wondering about how to verify that Intel chipset program - infinst_autol.exe - is installed correctly.

Can I should use -a to extract all files in a folder on C:\ and then go to the Control Panel and update driver from there (something similar to what I did when I downgraded this machine from Vista to XP). If so, does someone have the exact instructions on which item to select in Device manager and update the driver?

    Thanks for your assistance.

Hi there ... Windows should find the best Driver for your Chipset .. Your Chipset is Mobile Intel® 945GM Express Chipset Family ..

My XP shows PM965/GM965/GL960 under System devices and I was following a link from the web that had provided instructions on how to migrate the laptop from XP to Win-7 and asked to install this intel exe first.

That is the way Dell likes to do things .. In your case it is different there is no need to Install the old Driver .. The one Windows will Install will not be the much newer either ...

Most of the drivers, including the chipset drivers will be installed by Windows. However, Windows will only install the generic, basic function, "HD Audio Codec" for the sound drivers. Dell has a Vista Sigmatel sound driver available. It is compatible with Windows 7. Any other device drivers needed (again Dell only has Vista but they are compatible) can also be downloaded at the link below.

Thanks for your help but Dell does not provide drivers for Win-7 for this unit. Hence was looking at other forums etc.

As I mentioned Dell has Vista drivers and the Vista drivers ARE compatible with Win 7. Win 7 uses the same device drivers as Vista. Actually, Win 8 also uses the same drivers.

In addition to the excellent advice you've been given, be sure read over and follow the steps to get and keep a perfect Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7, including the Special Note to Dell Owners at the end. The tutorial also deals with how drivers are best handled in Win7.
