Windows 7: xp after vista

I suspect that the Dell XP disk you borrowed is not a clean copy of XP but some type of Dell recovery disk which will not run except on Dell machines.

What does it say on the disk itself? Explore the files in the root of the CD and tell us what they are.

If you know for a fact it is a clean copy of XP, then boot from the disk and have it format the partition where you want to install XP and see if that helps.

Using the disk to format partition.

Dear Gregrocker,

I wish I would know how to format using the disk from Dell. It is not a disk i borrowed but what came with an XP Desktop that I gave to my mother-in-law and she has now.

The disk says: "Operating System already installed on your computer, Reinstallation DVD". But it worked well with a Toshiba laptop that I had a few moths ago and that now I sold to a friend. But I am not certain of this though.

I do see some " dell" drivers install in the process of booting from the disk when the OS is copying itself to the computer and I agree with you this must be it.

I hope you can tell me how to format from the Dell disk.

Thanks in advance for your help you all...

Well now we know why it halted installation "to avoid damage to your computer."

You don't want to use that XP installer at all as it is for Dell OEM's.

Further more, if you used a Win7 Upgrade to install 64 bit Win7 on the other drive, then XP (if it came with that machine) is no longer useable under the EULA. Only if you used a Win7 full retail version can you continue to use an XP OEM which came with that machine, and you need to find a cleaner XP disk to put it on, or order recovery disks.

I have two drives (C and D) with Vista on one and Win 7 on the other (not sure if they're actual drives or partitions of a single drive, how do I tell?). I am dual booting and never use Vista. Starting to need the disk space and want to delete Vista. Is this difficult in this scenario?
