Unusual language problems after installing windows 7

Hi all,

I'm new here but I'm having a very specific problem after moving from Vista to Win7 Ultimate today.

Here is the issue:

The version I own started setup in Russian (not sure why)?? I managed to get through the installation and all went well. Once I got to the desktop I accessed the control panel and changed ALL the language settings, locale, keyboard settings, time zone etc to English/UK.

At first glance this has worked well and all menus and text display in English...accept for a couple of menus like the one that pops up when you right click the desktop. Here is a picture so you can see what I mean.

Anyone know what the hell is going on? I can't figure it out even after hours of searching the web and trying different things out.

Hi Keezer, welcome to the Seven Forums.

Please tell exactly what version of Windows 7 Ultimate (OEM, Retail Full, Retail Upgrade) you have, what kind of install media (DVD, ISO file) you have, and where did you buy it?

I'm not very good at this stuff so forgive me if I don't make much sense.

I bought this computer from my friend who has moved on to a laptop, he said it had Vista on it and handed me a DVD with what he said was an ISO of Win 7 he had downloaded but never installed. Does that make sense?

Is it likely to be a ripped off version?

Yes, it makes sense, it about confirms what I suspected after reading that your installation started in Russian.

You have (I am quite sure of this) a pirated version of Windows 7. According to our forum rules, assisting you in piracy is forbidden and could lead us both to be banned.

I recommend you to get a valid, legal copy of Windows 7 or Windows 8 and start from scratch by doing a clean install, wiping the hard disk empty.

Ok thanks. I have the original Vista disk here so I will install that and go back to the original OS until I can get a real version of Win 7 or 8. Thanks for the heads up.

As the screenshot of one context menu in your original post shows, you never know what you get with these pirate copies. You really are better off in going now back to Vista and considering upgrade options with time.
