How big should my Windows 7 64-bit partition be?

I'm installing it again after a failed Ubuntu install and at the partitioning screen, I have DISK 0 PARTITION 1 of type SYSTEM and 47mb in size. And there's DISK 0 Unallocated Space 465GB. How should I go about doing this? It's the first time I've done it.

What are you trying to do?

A clean reinstall of Windows, with no Linux?

Delete all partitions, leaving unallocated space. Continue with the install. Windows will create a small system reserved partition (no more than 200 MB) and a large C covering the entire remainder of the drive.

Make sure no other drives are connected.

If you decide later that C is too large, you can reduce it.

I've installed windows on my c drive which has 448GB left. If I partition it, how much would be needed for the OS partition? It's Windows 7 Home Premium.

For what purpose would you like to partition the disk. If for data then you can make the Win7 partition smaller (100gb) since the most expandable User folders will be in their own partition vault. If Win7 becomes irreparable you can always reimage C OS and Programs partition in 20 minutes and have your data current and waiting in D.

Or perhaps you have another purpose for the other partition? Let us know it and we'll help you decide.

I still don't know your intent, but......

A bare Windows 7 install, updated, will take about 20 GB.

You should of course leave some free space and you need space for any applications or data that might end up on the Windows partition.

Most people would suggest you allow at least 60 GB for C. I'd guess the average is 100 GB or more.

If you have 448 GB free on C after Windows is already installed, you can reduce that easily as you see fit---down to 80 or 120 or whatever you want. And then use that saved space for another partition.
