Windows 7: "Preparing your Desktop" and then blue screen with no HDD activity

So you have set one OS as first hard drive to boot in BIOS setup, then boot the other using the one-time BIOS Boot menu key?

This is the cleanest method of Dual Boot anyway.

However since both of the hard drives are now independently bootable, you can install EasyBCD to Win7 to add XP to a Dual Boot and now each will remain independent whle you'll still have the Windows Boot Menu which many find easier.

XP Pro and Win7 Pro both 32 bit plus Win 8.1 64bit

Yes Greg, tht is what I have done.

But the other is an intriguing idea!

But I think I will do it the hard way for the moment so I don't risk anything

I will have a rest while I finish off make my wife's new PC. She is used to XP but I have persuaded her that Win 7 will work for her as well! As it is a new PC then at least that should be free of problems. But we do prefer Outlook Express so I have bought a copy of OEClassic that seems to work well.

PS - the new PC's install of Win 7 from my DVD won't activate so I am going to have to go through the ""Contact Microsoft"" rigmarole to sort that out
