Will this work OK?

I have W7 HP on Drive C, and a new drive in D. I have W7 Pro upgrade disc. What I would like to end up with is W7 Pro on C, and my current C drive in the system as D, with all data intact, so I can take my time moving data over.
Here's how I think I need to do that and I would appreciate any comments if I'm incorrect. I have SATA drives on a dual core.
I will boot from C to my current Win7 HP installation, insert the W7 Pro upgrade CD, and install W7 Pro on the new D drive. I will then shut down and remove the C drive, and boot from the W7 Upgrade disc to do a repair on D, so that I can get a boot sector on it, and so that the system will see it as the primary C drive since it will be the only drive in the system (unsure about this part.)
I will then shut down, and put the original C drive back in the system and when I come back up on W7, the system should now see the former C drive as D. And I'll be good to go.
Or won't I?

Thanks Lee but I have the Win 7 Pro upgrade disc. If I just leave the new drive in the system with no OS on it, and boot the computer from the Win 7 Pro upgrade disc in the DVD drive, it won't find an OS to upgrade from. Wouldn't that be a problem?

Only if you don't have the original install disc. Did the computer come with an install disc or was it already installed, and no OEM disc provided. If this is the case do you have the ability to create an install disc off the HP install (some new systems give you the ability to do just that. If not does the HP allow you to request a copy of the OEM used to setup your computer.

If no Disco came with the computer, then you will have to do so as you have already suggested. Again Theoretically it should work, though not sure if it will. I will again test this on my system and see what happens, and let you know (since mind is already in the same configuration yours). Give me about fifteen minutes.

I have done the following along those lines - and that works: I have 2 physical Sata drives (drive1 is actually an SSD). On drive0 I have Vista. That I disconnected (pulled the power cable). Then I installed Win7 from a DVD on drive1 (check/change the boot sequence in the BIOS first to be able to boot from the optical drive). Then I put the power cable back on drive0. Now I have 2 independent operating systems that each have their own bootrecord. I switch between the 2 systems by changing the bootsequence in the BIOS (very easy).

WHS, that is exactly what I hope to end up with. But, was your W7 installation disc a full version, or an upgrade version? I can certainly install on an empty drive with the full version. But I assume the upgrade version needs to see a verified OS in place.

Lee: I hope this doesn't confuse you, but the Win7 HP version I'm currently running is an upgrade from OEM Vista HP, which I performed last week. I orginally ordered W7 Pro directly from Microsoft when they had that half-off special earlier this year. Meantime, I learned that moving from Vista HP to W7 Pro would require reinstalling all programs. I didn't want to do that so I called Microsoft and cancelled the W7 Pro order, and purchased W7 HP locally and did the upgrade. But this is my gaming rig, and from what I've learned, there could be many reasons for the game crashes. Meanwhile, the W7 Pro disc arrived in the mail and when I checked my credit card, I found that Microsoft billed me for it. So now, I think my best best is a clean install of W7 Pro and a reinstall of COD (I play COD2, COD4, COD5 and soon c, exclusively) using Pro's virtual XP mode. And so, yes, I have an OEM disc for Vista HP, and, I have the upgrade disc for W7 HP, which is what I'm currently running on C. Hopefully, if I can get W7 Pro installed, I can call Microsoft and "release" the W7 HP upgrade disc so that I can use that on my Vista HP laptop.

No that does not confuse me, along as you the the preinstall disc you can do the upgrade. Attempted to switch the disk around, no go, however, the suggestion given by whs should work for you. Just do as you originally were thinking about, and when asked to supply an original version disc for your system just insert the Vista disc and all should go well. Then once all files have been transfered you can reformat the original HD if that is what you want. Good Luck, and please post back how things worked out. :)

Thanks Lee. I thought I had read elsewhere that a Windows 7 upgrade disc does not ask for verification media. Guess that was wrong. So I'll plan to proceed, hopefully tonight.

My Win7 DVD was from the Win7 RC that I burnt myself. There is an instruction by Brink here on how to make a clean install with an upgrade disk. I'll try to find it.

Just do the workaround for clean installing Upgrade. You meet the EULA for Upgrading by having a prior qualifying OS, as long as you don't continue using the older OS. And you won't after setting up Win7, to judge by how quickly others are bailing out of dual-boots, which are messy to get out of. Yours is a much better option.
