    upgrade win7 on dual boot system with windows xp

    Hi.

    Right now i have dual boot system with windows 7 and xp - HP laptop. Windows 7 was installed first. XP was installed later. There are 4 primary partitions.
    1. system reserved 100MB
    2. win7 32 bit partition
    3. xp partition
    4. additional partition for data

    And now i need to upgrade win7 32 to win 7 64 bit. I know it has to be a clean install.
    I searched the forum and found info about creating dual boot 7/xp.

    Basically right now i have both iof them installed, so if i reinstall/clean instal windows 7 on partition 2 will windows xp stay bootable?

    Is this the way to go?
    Format my partition 2 and install fresh copy win7 64 bit?
    What about boot info for xp?

    Thanks

    Let us see a screenshot of Disk Management - Post a Screen Capture Image.

    During the booted Clean Install Windows 7 Steps 7/8 delete System Reserved and Windows 7 partition only, then create in that space a new partition for the install which will also likely create a new System Reserved partition. Format both partitions, make sure the new C partition is highlighted, then click Next.

    This should configure a Dual Boot with XP, but if not afterwards install EasyBCD to add XP to a Windows Dual Boot.

    Also look over the steps to do a perfect Clean Reinstall Windows 7 which covers everything to back up, how to achieve and maintain a perfect install.

    I have only 1 disk with just 4 primary partitions of app. sizes: 100MB system res 200GB-win7 60GB-winXP 200GB-data. So if i delete and format system reserved and win7 partition that would do no harm to winXP boot files? I mean there is no winXP boot related stuff on system reserved partitions? My first thought was to format only win7 partition and leave reserved intact. But i was only guessing. Will post disk management screenshot next week. Thanks

    Need to see 7 and XP Disk Mgmt to know for sure. When Win7 is installed last it normally configures Dual Boot editing boot files on XP partition. But if not you can add XP using EasyBCD.

    Save a backup image of XP once we see if its self bootable with the System Active flags on its partition in XP Disk Mgmt. So include Screenshot with Paint

    Hi. Posting screenshots.

    Win7 is in slovenian language.

    Quick translation:
    zdrava = healthy
    zagon = boot
    primarna = primary
    Odstranjevalna = page file
    izvoz = dump

    Do i need to delete partitions 1 and 2 and in that place install win7 or is it enough to format partition with win7 and in that partition install new win7 64 bit?

    If i create backup of just xp partition that partition will not boot in virtual machine (missing ntldr). tried fixing boot, mbr... but if i create backup of all partitions then xp is bootable.

    In this case where both OS's are being booted by System Reserved I would only format the Win7 partition during booted 64 bit install in the hope it will reconfigure a Dual Boot with the XP boot files already there.

    If not install EasyBCD to Add XP which may prompt to install XP boot files.
