well if you were able to install the HD in your laptop and pull all of the photo's then the HD must be good so why not try to put back the HD in your daughters laptop and see if it boots.. if it doesn't what errors are you receiving? maybe it might not be a HD issue but an issue with the motherboard...

Note that the product key that you may have found with a keyfinder is a generic OEM key and useless for reinstallation. You have to use the key from the COA sticker that looks like this. It is on the bottom of the laptop or in the battery compartment.

If the laptop has less than 4 GB RAM use 32 Bit.
If the laptop has 4 GB or more RAM use 64 Bit.

If you can see the files and folders on her Hard Drive,
If there are Program Files AND Program Files (x86) folders, it is a 64 Bit OS.
If there is only the Program Files folder, it is a 32 Bit OS.

Here is a tutorial by gregrocker with everything needed for a re-install:

ya not gunna believe this but I only gone and fixed it been messing about all morning in command prompt bootrec this and fixmbr that was I using 32 bit recue disk I don't know ????? when stumbled onto short video on that there internet that solved all my problems

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H2xoMEPfiPQ

although the second option to save files was greyed out good job I already saved because I couldn't see a way stop this process, anyway all is back up and running like new, just got to put boot order back to normal soon as it sorts it self out

boot order on this acer aspire 5332 was well weird even tho I had cdrom at top of list it wouldn't boot unless I had windows installation at the bottom too ?? and this recovery/reinstall has not changed that but still boots into windows its currently updating tons of rubbish lol hope this helps someone out there

    she has lost installation cd
She may have never had the DVDs unless it was an option she paid for. There is a program on the computer for creating the set of Factory Restore discs, usually prompted to do so during setup but can be done later. And usually only one set can be created. There may even be a choice of created a bootable USB drive with the same files but would need an 8GB or larger.
