    This is the report.
I am confused about where I went wrong.
I noticed that the PC is identified as running OEM also.

    Thank you

It's OEM System builder which was allowed via phone activation to move to another mobo, correct?

Is there any chance this mobo is similar to the previous one even though on a different model PC?

This comports with other reports we've gotten that MS is allowing Builder's OEM to migrate even though the EULA specified it becomes tied to first mobo installed upon. This may be because only OEM version of Win7 remains available.

history of this PC as I know it..(it's a "hand me down")
    purchased HP with Vista OEM
purchased upgrade to Windows 7 (used this os for 2 or 3 years I think)
    switched HDD's
    failed to activate

If you moved the hard drive then the activation we are concerned with is what was done on that hard drive in the previous PC. this is because when you moved the HD the Product Key was not changed but kept for reactivation, which it did. The Activation report says it had used an OEM System Builder license. Do you remember that being used on that Win7 that resided on that hard drive before it was moved??

This thread is about moving your hard drives so obviously we need to reference the license which had been used on that hard drive's Win7 installation if you intend to keep it for reactivating on the new PC and not the old PC which has been abandoned.

Focus on what license was used on each Win7 installation and not the PC it is or was installed in.

Now if the hard drive you mention above was Upgraded from Vista with Retail Upgrade and swapped into new hardware it may require a quick Workaround to activate Upgrade version on changed hardware.

    yes this is what happened..
the hard drive was Upgraded from Vista with Retail Upgrade (used on same hardware for a couple of years) then swapped into new hardware recently.. this is when activation became an issue.

The key activated in the mgadiag report is Builders OEM so is it possible you have it confused with the other Win7 hard drive?

You said one was activated using Anytime Upgrade? Which was that?

Have you activated the other HD's OS?

May I ask, why did you switch 1 hard drive from 1 machine and put it in the other and vice versa, according to your post #3

I switched the hard drives because I wanted to use the quad core vs the dual core PC
the dual core seemed to bog down while accessing large data base I use for research.

As you suggest, maybe I have crossed the activation type.
For now, I am using Ubuntu on the other PC & attempting to re-install software in the Windows 7 PC.
