    Dual boot Windows 7

After I finished the build, something went kaflooey when I was installing Windows 7 and I had to shut down and re-load the O.S. Ever since then, when powering up, I get the prompt screen asking me which system I want to load. I believe it thinks it has a dual boot system, but that's not the case.

Other than being a minor inconvenience (as it always chooses the correct one after the default time goes by or I hit "enter"), everything loads and runs correctly.

How do I remove that 2nd dummy partition? I've tried poking around using a partition manager, but I can't seem to make that 2nd partition disappear. Maybe I'm doing something wrong.

Thanks in advance for your advice

    Chris

How-To Remove an OS from Windows Dual Boot Config [Step-by-Step]

    1. Boot into the NON Windows 7 OS (original OS before you installed Windows 7 as a dual-boot). For most people this would mean booting into your Vista install however I’m going to guess there might be a few who setup a Dual-Boot config with Windows 2008 also (me for instance).
    2. Click Windows Start button and Type msconfig and Press Enter (or click it with mouse)

    2. Click Boot Tab, Click the OS you want to keep and Click Set as default

    3. Click Windows 7 OS and Click Delete. Click OK

There was no previous O.S. I installed on a pristine hard drive.

Just Set the timer in msconfig to 0 seconds.

Or you could see if the defunct OS listing shows up in EasyBCD, but I doubt if it does.

Someone also suggested this in another thread.

Easiest way in this case would be: fdisk /mbr

On my computer the minimum time out you can select is 3 seconds.

Something is wrong with the MBR. Rebuilding it is probably your best bet - e.g. with the bootable CD of partition wizard.

I decided to throw caution to the wind and try RUSTBERGER's suggestion, and it worked perfectly. I was under the impression that I had to have a working dual boot, but that wasn't the case. I deleted the non-functioning partition and problem solved. Cheers mate !

Thank you to to all who took the time to post. I will mark this problem as "resolved".

That only removes the listing from the Boot Menu. If you think you installed a second OS when you reinstalled then we need to see the Disk Management screenshot to help you determine and correct this, lest you have a bunch of space wasted by a second OS which could yet interfere.

    Dual boot Windows 7-disc-mgt.jpg

There is no indication of any partition other than what needs to be there.

    Voila ! Problem solved
