Possible to download W7 online on one PC - install on another?

I've got a working PC running W7. This OS was installed from a disk.

Now I've put together another PC and I'd like to buy an online copy of Windows and install on this new PC.

It's got no OS at the moment. Can I download the OS with the PC that already has an OS, burn an ISO of the OS to a stick or a disk, and then install this on the new PC?

Of course you can, but does it come with an activation key ?

You can buy windows right from Newegg, or in your case, somewhere near you.

Operating Systems, Microsoft Windows - Newegg.com

You can always install ubuntu or Linux for free.

    Main Page - Linux Mint

Or Zorin OS 9 is nice.

    Hello Gadgety,

Yes, you sure can, then activate it with the key that came with the purchased Windows. :)

The purchased one is OEM, so only on one PC. Thank you anyway.

Thank you for your reply. Excellent to know that it can be downloaded on one pc, burned to a USB and then installed on the other PC. It wasn't that clear on Microsoft's website. Their texts seemed to suggest one already has an OS, and then replaces it. Er, embarassingly I hadn't considered installing Linux as an intermediary OS. It's got to be Windows in the end, as it will be used for gaming.

You might want to trial Clean Install Windows 10 Technical Preview which I've had installed for over three months on my laptop and have never been back to Win7 it is so good.

The rule of thumb is not to use a beta on a production machine but this isn't even beta yet and its more stable than any beta build of Win7, faster, and clearly its logical successor later this year.

Otherwise you'll need to buy a Win7 license which is frequently $99 for Home Premium on Tiger Direct. This is what Brink was referring to when saying you can download the OS and then have 30 days to insert the Product Key.
