Windows 7: Windows Installer not recognizing USB drives

12 Feb 2015   #11

Again, if you want to use the BIOS UEFI features it needs to be installed using UEFI to a GPT disk. This requires formatting the stick using only Option One from UEFI Bootable USB Flash Drive - Create in Windows making sure the settings remain exactly as shown in the picture provided, since they tend to jump around. If the ISO is valid it will work. What ISO source are you using?

Then the flash stick needs to be booted as a UEFI device which you did not say you are doing. Confirm this now.

Only if you give up on UEFI install should CSM be enabled in BIOS setup, following Bypass UEFI to Install WIn7

The BIOS is being confusing right now because I'm being told that Legacy needs to be enabled in order for CSM to be enabled, but in order to run the system as UEFI, Legacy needs to be disabled, but then so will be CSM, I don't know how to configure it as just UEFI and keep CSM enabled.

Anyway, the Windows 7 source was the free Enterprise trial edition and using rufus to make it a bootable USB, it still isn't working, I'll post screenshots tonight but I think I'm going to give up, this is simply too ridiculous to do, HP has made this too complicated to figure out and I'll just give the computer back to my friend, whom I've already explained all this too and he said if it can't be set up, he'll return for a refund.

If you'd told us you're installing Enterprise trial we could have told you it probably wouldn't work anyway as it's a special edition with expiring activation after 90 days. So that would likely explain why the flash installer wouldn't' work.

I will always try to get it installed to UEFI first so you can enjoy the extra BIOS features. Only if it will not install to UEFI do I recommend changing to CSM or Legacy mode. However it's not been necessary for quite a long time to abandon UEFI since with cooperation we can always get it installed to UEFI.
