Sticker product key doesn't work after system re-install

    Hi guys,

my computer is a HP Pavilion G6 1180EW.
I've tried to do system recovery for two days but failed for various reasons - the old system was gone, the new didn't work and reported errors with no options other than "try again" etc. After 2 days of trying, I've finally downloaded a different copy of WIN7 Home Prem 64 bit (on a different machine), created a bootable USB and installed it. Unfortunately the product key from the sticker on the bottom of my machine doesn't work - no idea why. No I've 29 days left :)

    Here's the report I get:

The product key in this report is completely different than the one on my sticker. Any idea on how to proceed to get my Windows copy activated?
Btw. - last week my cpu fan crashed and I gave my laptop for repair to a local company, which also sells laptops - is it possible they've used my product key and now it's no longer working for me?

    Help! :)

If you have the right version of Windows 7 then it should activate with the key from the COA sticker.

Use the phone activation method, see if that works. If not let Microsoft handle it for you.

Are you typing in the key exactly as it is on the COA ? Check again with a magnifying glass, there`s no reason it won`t work.

Exactly what message are you getting after it fails to activate ?

Where exactly did you get the iso from, as you can no longer download it without a retail key, COA keys don`t work.

As stated the key will always work. If not then the reason is almost always a character being inputted wrong. You can take a cell phone picture of the COA sticker's PRoduct Key and enlarge it to be sure of the accuracy.

Are you sure you got the correct version? What is the ISO's source? Did you follow the other steps in Clean Reinstall Windows 7

    The error message I get:
'The product key you have entered does not appear to be a vaild Windows 7 product key. Please check your product key, and type it again'

Indeed I have some doubts about 2 numbers on the sticker (not sure if they're 8's or 9's, since the sticker isn't in very good shape), but I've tried all combinations and none of the works. I've used a picture and even my girlfriends' eyes so I'm pretty sure that this is the proper key.

I've downloaded this windows version from a link on a forum...(downloading from MS doesn't work since my version is OEM, not retail) but again - the sticker on my laptop states Win7 Home Prem OE, I've downloaded Win7 Home Premium SP1 64-bit iso, so I guess I do have the proper version. Can I verify that further?

Regarding phone activation - Microsoft works in Poland unfortunately only Mon-Fri 9-17, so it'll have to wait.

Try all variants of any characters in doubt. B, 8, 9, etc. Use the most powerful magnifier you can find. The key will work when you get the characters correct.

If MS Customer service wants to help they can resissue the key based on Product ID info gleaned. But if not they will refer you to the OEM. Let us know how these interactions go so we can report them for all to read.

    Hurray!

I was sceptical but I've tried all combinations and it really turned out that one of the 8/9's was a B - thank you greglocker!
