    Not sure what you mean.

    Do you mean that you can borrow a friend's Dell-supplied Windows 7 installation disc that came with the friend's own Dell D420, which is the same model as your daughter's machine?

    If that's what you mean, I'd guess it might work. Certainly a better chance than something found on a torrent.

    Dell may be able to supply a Windows disk for a fee?

    Dell is the only brand that will provide Reinstallation DVD which has nothing added, just the OS and a Dell logo. Call their tech support.

    YOu seem to be confused about drivers. Win7 is a driver-complete OS unlike XP, so you don't need to provide a bunch of drivers because any that are not in the installer are almost all provided after install by Windows Update.

    More tips to get and keep a perfect install here: Clean Reinstall Windows 7

    A prompt for drivers during the install normally means the installer is bad. Try a new ISO burned to disk using ImgBurn at 4x speed.

    @daviditfc

    One driver I would get and put on a usb drive, is the Ethernet 32 bit driver. I happen to have a dell install 64 bit re-installation disk and I also have the 32 bit digital river iso burned to cd. I am not sure I have the 32 bit iso image of windows 7. I was also told by some posters you need to install the chipset drivers first, then you can install the remaining drivers in any order.

    If under warranty call their tech support, if not under warranty call their sales line. I would also get a 32 bit driver disk unless you already have one.

    Is the hard drive detected in BIOS setup?

    The error almost always means a bad installer, since the only driver which pertains here is the SATA controller driver and Win7 has them all.

    However you can go to your PC or mobo's Support Downloads website to locate the 32 bit SATA controller driver to try to upload it to be sure. I had time to do this for you just now but you didn't even provide your model number so there's no way to do it.

    Where did you download the ISO from? Link? How did you burn the DVD?

    Do you have an EFI BIOS? This is critical. Reboot into BIOS setup to search for settings for CSM, UEFI, EFI, Compatibility Mode, and Secure Boot. When you booted disk was there a choice for EFI DVD drive?

    The only time I've had that issue is if the hard drive was not marked as active :/
