Is Windows 7 using Vista files for boot?

    Hey guys,

I like many others have a dual boot with Vista and now want to delete it. I have read other threads about using "Startup and Recovery" to remove Windows Vista from the Splash screen and then Formatting that Vista partition.

However I have also read something about W7 using boot files from the Vista partition. How do I no if W7 is doing this or not. I believe W7 is the primary boot OS.

    Many Thanks

You can use Easybcd to remove Vista from the startup screen.

Post a screenshot of disk management. I can then tell you steps necessary on how to proceed.

    Hey Guys,

Thanks for replies. Sorry I didn't post a screen shot in the first post.

That's OK - you had to find out how to do it.

Do you mind having a large amount of Unallocated space ( or a large partition ) on the left of 7 - as it is now?

Or were you wanting to get 7 over to the left ( as seen in Disk Management view).

I want to extend the partition but I know how to do that.

I was wondering if it is safe to just format the D:/ drive which has Vista on, or whether the W7 partition is using some boot files as in other posts?

    Anyone?

    To clarify the above post.

    1. I would like to remove Vista completely.
    2. I would like to merge both partitions so W7 and a load of free space is all on one partition.

Many thanks guys, I have used the search tool but everyone seems to have conflicting theories. Maybe there is a tut I am missing?

The boot critical files are on the Vista partition.

From within 7, open an elevated command prompt, and type:

    bcdboot c:\windows /s c:

    then press enter.

Put the 7 dvd in the drive, then type:

    e:\boot\bootsect /nt60 c:

    then press enter.

In Disk Management, rt click C and Mark active.

Take the dvd out. Restart the pc.

Now you should be able to delete the Vista partition in Disk Management.

I have a similar situation. I have Vista installed on C:, Win 7 installed on W: (each separate physical hard drives). My optical drive is e:.

What commands do I need to remove Vista and boot directly from Window 7? Can you go through the same steps as above for my configuration?
