Please list the steps you've taken, and be sure to not leave anything out. A list like this would help:

    1. Boot DVD
    2. At first screen, asked to insert driver disk.
    3. Etc, etc, etc.

That will help us understand what you are doing. Also, have you reviewed the manual to make sure you have the correct BIOS configuration? Have you checked out the Gigabyte website to see if they have a support forum available?

yes, it is in the first available port, which is SATA2_1 i believe.

as for the windows installation, everything goes smoothly until i get to the 'where do you want to install?' screen. it says 'no drives were found'

i can go to load drivers, but none of the ones i've tried have worked. i am never directly asked to load drivers.

downloading GParted right now. will i be able to boot and format it on the new computer?

I just remembered that the 8.9 version of the Intel Matrix Storage Manager doesn't work for crap with Windows 7. I recall I similar install issue on an Asus board with the Intel SATA driver.

    Try using the 8.8 version:

    64-bit Floppy Configuration Utility

It solved the install problem for the Asus board - hopefully it'll do the same for you.

Also you didnt accidentally plug HDDs into SATA spot on mobo?
yes, the HDD is is plugged in the SATA port on the motherboard. should it not be?

btw it's a 1tb hdd, and i've tried the drivers on gigabyte's website, but to no avail.
I meant to say: you didnt accidentally plug HDDs into SATA RAID port...
u want the HDDs in regular SATA spot, unless u want RAID.

    GParted worked for me too!

I just want to say thanks to Darryl for posting your suggestion on using GParted. I had the same problem as JCPrich, I assembled a PC brand new and couldn't get Windows to see the hard drive. I was hoping that the Windows boot CD would give me the option to partition the disk, but to no avail. I stumbled on this thread in a search, and GParted worked for me as well. I'm still working on my expertise in PC building so this helped a lot. Thanks!
